Yuri Briar (ユーリ・ブライア, Yūri Buraia?) is Yor Forger's younger brother and a twenty-year-old man who works in the State Security Service. He keeps his job at the SSS a secret from his sister and instead pretends to be a normal civil servant at the foreign ministry.
Appearance[]
Yuri is a handsome young man in his twenties with a very small cowlick on top of his straight black hair with uneven bangs. He also has red eyes.
When at work, Yuri wears the SSS's standard uniform. When leaving work, he wears a coat over his black suit and tie, along with black gloves.
Personality[]
Yuri is a gentle, soft-spoken individual who's generally considered good at talking with people. He usually presents himself with a cheerful and amusing attitude towards others. This charming personality of his is even noted by his boss, who describes him as "adorable like a puppy". Beneath this laid-back persona, Yuri also has a cruel, ruthless side that truly shows whenever he's interrogating people. Yuri is also rather patriotic and does whatever he can in order to assist his nation, Ostania, in capturing foreign spies, especially Agent Twilight, who he has a special hatred for.
Yuri's most striking personality trait is his sister complex. He's overly attached to his sister, Yor, to an unhealthy degree and will usually go above and beyond in order "protect her". This is also the reason why he has a massive distrust for Loid Forger and is suspicious of his intentions with his sister, often getting confrontational whenever he's with him. Yuri also does everything to get his sister's approval, as he really looks up to her and considered Yor a maternal figure for most of his life.
Much like his sister, Yuri also has an affinity for drinking. He usually will lose control of himself and chug several bottles of wine, especially under stress. While drunk, Yuri will usually get temperamental and not really think straight, as well as frequently make decisions based on his impulses which he regrets immediately after, showcased when he ordered Yor and Loid to kiss in front of him, but immediately regretted once the couple starts to prepare themselves for the kiss, shouting at them to stop.
Despite having a rather morally questionable occupation and normally having an antagonistic role in the series, Yuri will oftentimes show some displays of genuine kindness (such as when he agreed to help Anya in her studies to become an Imperial Scholar) and sometimes, even having some heroic moments of his own like when he agreed to join the SSS operation to save his afromentioned adopted niece and her classmates from a bus hijacking by the Red Circus terrorist group. It's worth noting, however, that those two exemplified situations were either motivated directly by Yor, or by Yuri's gut feeling on how she would react to seeing her daughter get hurt, meaning he mostly does these acts for rather selfish reasons and only if they end up favoring his sister.
Relationships[]
Yor Forger[]
After both of their parents died in the war, Yor was the one who raised Yuri during his childhood despite living in poverty. Because of this, he has developed a sister complex and will do anything to keep Yor safe, to the point of suspecting her husband of being an enemy spy. He holds a deep appreciation for Yor, as seeing her work bloody all for his sake in their youth motivated him to become a successful man, and vowed to protect his last living relative.
Loid Forger[]
Since Yuri is protective of his sister, he acts rudely towards Loid and thinks he is unworthy of his sister.
Anya Forger[]
Yuri first meets Anya in person when Yor calls him over to tutor the girl for her midterm exams. Neither of them has a good impression of the other due to Yuri's dislike of Loid and his child, while Anya gets creeped out by Yuri's overly obsessive thoughts about his sister. Using Yuri's love for Yor, Anya is able to persuade him into tutoring her seriously, and he eventually shares his motivation for studying when he was younger, teaching her that knowledge is power. Although Yuri later stomps off in frustration when Anya fails to learn anything, the study session makes him realize that he needs more knowledge in order to keep his sister and country safe.
It is shown that afterward, the two seem to have a rather fine relationship when Yuri (along with Loid and Yor) tells Anya that lying is wrong, despite them all lying about themselves.
