Yumi is a playable character in the Senran Kagura series, and the face of the second timeline. She made her debut in Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus.
A third-year student and the leader of the Gessen Girls’ Academy elite shinobi. Her grandfather Kurokage was a rival to the legendary ninja Hanzō. She lost her parents when she was young, so Kurokage raised her along with the other Gessen girls.
Her fighting style combines traditional Japanese dance with ice-based Ninja Arts.
Despite her outwardly icy appearance, she holds a big sister's love for her teammates. Now that Kurokage has passed away and left her in charge, she strives to lead with a firm but gentle hand.
Appearance[]
Yumi is a fairly tall girl with pale skin, light blue eyes, medium dark gray hair and an overall average complexion. She uses to adorn her hair with a wide white ribbon tie with blue stripes on ends.
In her shinobi clothes, she wears a solid white furisode kimono that hangs off her shoulders and exposes a large amount of her chest. The outfit has a blue double-lined trim with a blue obi on the back. Yumi also wears white socks but no shoes, or lavender flip flops since Estival Versus.
In her Ice Queen mode, Yumi loses her hair tie and allowing her hair to become longer in length in addition to becoming a light blue color and her eyes becoming red in hue.
Personality[]
Yumi is a calm and serious girl, taking her responsibility of leader of the Gessen elites, also recognized as stubborn for sticking to her goals and ideals, and their applications. She can still be naive as when Shiki achieve to have her do pointless fitness exercises.
Yet, she can be judgmental and pretentious, demonstrated during Hanzō Academy's story in Shinovi Versus where she deemed Asuka unworthy of facing her and made her fight Gessen's lower-ranked shinobi as an alternative, when Asuka presented what Yumi believed to be incompetence as a shinobi. By opposition, she can recognize Yozakura as far stronger than her despite the latter's contradictions. She can consider thinking seriously and review her ideals as of the Gessen Arc of Shinovi Versus when Yumi confronted Asuka and accepted her views.
Her leadership is revealed in Estival Versus and the Shinovi Masters anime as pretty lax despite an intent to be firm yet gentle, as she is rarely obeyed to, and often assisted by Yozakura. She is said by Shiki to be caring to her comrades by wanting the best of them and pushing them to the point of forgetting to relax sometimes. Trying to be more lenient and considerate of her comrades' feelings, she leaves Yozakura to discipline and yell at the others in her place when things get out of hand.
Yumi's major ideal is the "Justice of the Moon", according to which Justice is the help to those who needed it, as well as cuteness. It is her equivalent as Asuka's sword and shield.
Relationships[]
Asuka (Senran Kagura)[]
In Gessen's Story Mode, due to contrasting beliefs, Yumi and Asuka were immediately at odds with one of another in their first battle. Yumi believed in wiping out all Evil Shinobi while Asuka believed that there's more to Evil Shinobi then just being evil. Yumi refused to accept such beliefs, resulting in them clashing. Upon learning about the different forms of Evil Shinobi, Yumi has a change of heart and settles her differences with Asuka and the two became friends after their final battle.
Yozakura (Senran Kagura)[]
Yumi seems to have the best relationship with Yozakura out all the Gessen shinobi. Yozakura has a great respect for Yumi and is the only member of Gessen that is as diligent as she is when it comes to their training as shinobi.
Due to their similar work ethics, Yumi and Yozakura spend the most time together and often have one-to-one sparring sessions. When the others are goofing off, Yumi feels as though she can always look to Yozakura for support and agreement on the situation.
Yumi thinks highly of Yozakura's skills and power, viewing Yozakura to be stronger than herself despite Yozakura believing Yumi to be the stronger of the two since Yumi is the leader and always wins their sparring matches. In Estival Versus, Yumi decides to try and be more lenient and considerate of her comrades. This leads to Yozakura taking on the disciplinary role herself, scolding the others when they're not listening to Yumi so she won't have to do it herself anymore.
Shiki (Senran Kagura)[]
Yumi and Shiki have a stable relationship. Shiki seems to really enjoy coming to Yumi and asking her questions to which Yumi will always go above and beyond to get an answer to. Shiki thinks very highly of Yumi and doesn't think ill of her harshness as she knows that Yumi is only hard on them all because she cares deeply about them.
Murakumo (Senran Kagura)[]
Murakumo and Yumi seem to have a stable relationship. It is clear Yumi does not think ill of Murakumo in any way and merely wants her to be more confident in herself. This is demonstrated in Murakumo's Shinobi Girl's Heart story where Yumi even goes as far as trying to flatter Murakumo about how she doesn't need her mask.
Minori (Senran Kagura)[]
While Yumi is seen interacting with Minori the least of the girls in Gessen, it is implied that they two of them share a generally stable relationship as demonstrated with Minori addressed Yumi as Gessen's "Big Sis" during the Hanzō arc of Shinovi Versus.
Ikaruga (Senran Kagura)[]
Homura (Senran Kagura)[]
Yumi's relationship with Homura is roughly the same as it is with Miyabi. The two seem to have a general respect for each other and no real signs of animosity. They are perfectly capable of having a normal conversation and as shown in the Crimson Squad arc of Shinovi Versus, Yumi acknowledges the hardships of being a renegade and looks forward to seeing where Homura goes on her Path of the Shinobi.
Yomi (Senran Kagura)[]
Hikage (Senran Kagura)[]
Mirai (Senran Kagura)[]
Haruka (Senran Kagura)[]
Miyabi (Senran Kagura)[]
In Hebijo's story of Shinovi Versus, Yumi believes she and Miyabi are similar, due to older adult figures influencing their Shinobi paths and their devotion to them. The two seem to have at the very least a mutual respect for each other.
Murasaki (Senran Kagura)[]
Ryōbi (Senran Kagura)[]
Ryōna (Senran Kagura)[]
Yumi and Ryōna have somewhat of a one-sided relationship as shown in Ryōna's Shinobi Girl's Heart story in Shinovi Versus where she views Yumi as her ideal master and wishes to dance with her. However Yumi views Ryōna's dance as vulgar and tries to get away from her.
Despite Yumi's clear and desperate desire for her to stay away, Ryōna continues to pursue her while finding joy in the fact that Yumi is relentlessly giving her the cold shoulder. In the end Ryōna believes Yumi is just playing hard-to-get and decides to admire Yumi from the distance, wanting to dance with her even though she can't and that makes her extremely happy.
Fubuki (Senran Kagura)[]
In Senran Kagura: Shinovi Master -Tokyo Yōma-hen-, Fubuki was the first child Kurokage adopted after Yumi and before the other Gessen girls, making Fubuki Yumi's first adoptive sister. Yumi first met Fubuki when they were children when Kurokage introduces Fubuki to her and says that they'll be sisters from now on. While Fubuki originally hostile towards her, Yumi was very friendly towards Fubuki that they eventually became like real sisters.
When they reunite many years later, Yumi didn't remember or recognized Fubuki. Fubuki immediately recognized Yumi, but saw her as an enemy to her plans to exterminate all Shinobi. In their very first battle, Fubuki was able to easily beat Yumi even in her Ice Queen Mode. When Yumi remembers Fubuki and learns of her origins as a Yōma/human hybrid, Yumi tries to appeal to Fubuki that they can come to an understanding, but Fubuki refused to listen, claiming that Yumi can never understand her hatred and pain. In their final showdown, Yumi was able to beat Fubuki and stop her plans.
At the end of the anime, they are now on more friendly terms and Yumi wishes to fight Fubuki again as both a friend and rival.
