Wan Shi Tong is an ancient, wise, and powerful spirit who collects information for his Spirit Library. He is the most knowledgeable being among humans and spirits, never missing an opportunity to learn new facts or boast about his vast intelligence, though he has developed an indifference for studying human technology since leaving the physical world. Although his regular shape is that of a huge black-and-white barn owl, when angered he can assume much more frightening, stronger forms.
For many years, people have been trying to seek out his library because of its extensive collection of knowledge. Being that he owns the library, he would promit visitors to explore his library if they would offer some forms of knowledge in exchange.
However, during the 100 year war with the Fire Nation, many have seeked out his library to gain the upperhand against their enemies. One such known person was Zhao back when he was still an ensign. There, he obtained the knowledge of the moon and ocean spirits and their mortal forms. From there, he plotted to seek out the moon spirit to kill it as it is very much tied to the moon, a source of the waterbenders powers. Because of examples like this, Wan Shi Tong have become bitter towards humans for misusing the knowledge within his library. He had also became apathetic towards their plight as well as their 100 year war. Also because of this, he had attempted to bury is library within the sands.
When Aang and his friends visited the library after meeting a professor of Bai Sing Sai university, they explored the library, although Toph stayed behind as books and such would be completely useless to a blind girl. Aang made a promise to the owl spirit to not misuse any knowledge within the library. The owl accepted but remained suspicious. For a while, he kept his world, but as they were looking for knowledge to gain the upperhand against the Fire Nation, they found that so much of the knowledge consisting of the nation where reduced to ashes. All they were able to obtain was a parchment contain a date that was said to be called "The Darkest Day in Fire Nation History". With the help of a fox and a large device that can display the postion of the celestial bodies in the sky, such as the sun and the moon, they found out that said day consisted of a Solar Eclipse. Since the firebenders draw their power from the sun, a Solar Eclipse serves as a massive weakness to them. Upon finding out about what they had done, Won Shi Tong confronted them, expressed his anger, rage and frustration towards many doing what they had done and attacked them.
Won Shi Tong took on a monstrous form with Aang and his friends fighting back. From there, Won Shi Tond decided to completely bury his library so that no one will ever be allowed to use the knowledge within it ever again. The professor, however, decided to stay within the library as it had been his dream to find it. It was unknown of what happened to him, but he was most likely killed by Won Shi Tong.
Won Shi Tong's anger and hatred towards humans continued to escalate from there.
