"Evil is a word used by the ignorant and the weak. The Blackness is about survival. It's about unleashing your inner power. It glorifies the strength of the individual."

Tomas corrupted by the Blackness

The Blackness, also known as the Bogan, was an psychological-magic plague based in the Sin Virus that was created by the presence of Ara Astaroth on Prime Earth and later spread to countless universes. This disease was the only thing that connected the omniverse to Idea of Evil and 5 billion years later was the source of power that created The Darkness during the events of LOTM: Destiny. Those who used the Blackness were known as either Darksiders, Ara's Inquisitors, Blackness Adepts, Black Demons, Etherious, or Black Soul when unaffiliated with a Blackness organization such as The Revelation of Qliphoth. Unlike the Light Magicians, who were famous for using the light side of the magic, Darksiders drew power from raw emotions and feelings such as anger, hatred, greed, jealousy, fear, aggression, megalomania, and unrestrained passion.

In LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow Spin-Off - Firenza Junior spinoff, it was later revealed by Melancholia that the "bad blood" inside Carl Robinson's veins was none other the Blackness, caused by his father, Duke Firenza, whose blood was accused by Moloch. It was later revealed that Moloch gained some control on the Blackness as well after his duel with Ara in the Purgatory. Because his father's infection the the Blackness that slowly consumed him, Carl's blood was also tainted by the Blackness as well, and because of Pandora's interference, Duke Firenza did not turn into a monster. Years later, Melancholia managed to activate the corruptive power of the Blackness so that she would turn Carl into a malicious monster before manipulating him into slaughtering his friends.

Michael Langdon later discovered the Blackness after taking the blood of Carl, and it will become one of his most vital tools to make him achieve his malevolent goal.

Overview[]

"It takes strength to resist the Blackness. Only the weak embrace it!"
— Celica Arfonia to Imperia

Leohart using the Blackness

Individuals who exposed to the Blackness drew their power from darker emotions such as fear, anger, hatred, and aggression; thus becoming Black Demons from the Black Army and Etherious Demons. The Revelation of Qliphoth were major practitioners of the Blackness, and were the mortal enemies of Celica Arfonia. The Blackness was also considered to be a high-corrupting and infectious magic disease that slowly turned people in demons.

People like Kotori Itsuka believed that the source of Leohart's Cult power was the universe beyond the edges of the known omniverse, however, it was considered wrong as Ara was the person who infected many planets with her presence. Although many Magicians from Reality Council were taught to follow the light side, the Blackness was considered seductive, and a Magician had to maintain vigilance in order to avoid falling to the dark side, abandoning his humanity and becoming a Black Demon. Even a God raised in the traditions of the Light Magic from birth could quickly be corrupted by the lure of the Blackness in certain situations. Despite this, while the Gods often described the Blackness as a "quick and easy path," drawing upon its power did not necessarily come with ease or without cost to those who possessed strong compassion and were not used to drawing upon feelings such as hatred.

The Blackness can also be injected into the victims via using the Black Demons. A demon using Ara's Curse could infect a person with the Blackness if the subject enter inside of the body of the victim through an injury and slowly corrupt her using their most dark secret and negative emotions. The Blackness is also inside of the Black Tao and Black Tar, which explains the corruption of the people who drink it.

Use of the Blackness granted certain abilities that were generally closed to a user of the light side, such as possession, the ability to manipulate the future, and even, according to legend, to manipulate midi-chlorians to create life or keep someone from dying, granting this people immortality but exchange of having their sanity broken and becoming a loyal servant of Ara for all eternity whose only goal is to destroy the omniverse.

The power of the Blackness was penetrating and pernicious and could easily corrupt creatures like humans that are too naive and corrupt innocent people turning them into killers without necessary turning them in demons. Most of humans who accept this energy willing become Black Demons and Etherious Demons while people who are simply corrupted by it without their knowledge are corrupted and have their souls stained in black to the point that they cannot cross to afterlife, being forced to be stuck between the darkness of the Astral Words.

The Blackness was considered highly corrupting and could be even be considered like a zombie virus that can spread like a plague. Nu Wa believed that "Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny," a view she espoused despite having personally witnessed the redemption of at least two individuals who were at one time deeply steeped in the dark side; Lusamine and Sasha. Additionally, use of the Blackness by somebody with generally good intentions in a moment of weakness could leave that individual feeling weak and shivery, with a general feeling of wrongness.  If the presence of the Blackness was significantly powerful, nearby Energy-sensitives could feel cold.

Diabla manipulating the Blackness

The difference between the Blackness and light sides appears to be in how they feel to those who are aware of them. The light side at times has been described as a flowing river: soothing, constant, with hidden strength. In contrast, the Blackness has been described as a roaring fire: obviously powerful, seductive, and potentially dangerous. The Supreme God claimed that while the light side represented the compassion and tranquility of all beings of the omniverse, the dark side focused on individual passion and strength. He also mentioned that while the light side is about maintaining the status quo, the dark side is about change and evolution.

The Blackness was seen as having been used for selfish purposes, although many Black Demons who were accused of such selfishness claimed that the Blackness was simply a means to achieve an end to make themselves all-powerful once Ara was dead but when she was alive, it had the purpose to gather more minions to serve Ara Astaroth in her quest for chaos and destruction.

Many found the Blackness to be addictive, unable to resist its pull the more they were subjected to it, like Elesis Du Tirial during the events of LOTM: Sword of Kings AA Final - Eckidina Arc: Unit-CM 130 Arc. Even as their physical bodies slowly decayed, Blackness users became more powerful and are on the same level of Pure-Blooded Devil. However, some users, noted that the use of the Blackness was a practical matter, as the power it granted was more efficient when performing destructive powers like telekinesis. Like the light side, the Blackness was often treated as a semi-sentient entity with purposeful designs.

It has been theorized by some that there is no such thing as the Blackness but only malevolent intent in the user, since most Blackness users already possessed negative intentions like Elesis, Lusamine and Aki Honda or else fell victim to the temptations of absolute power and domination. It's also hinted that there was truly only one magic that was above such things as "positive and negative, black and white, good and evil." Ara stated that the only difference was that the Magicians saw the magic as a power in itself, while people like her believed it was a means to power.

Corruption[]

"I love this Blackness! I FEEL SO STRONG! "
— Demonio

A dragon is corrupted by the Blackness

The Blackness much like a strong, addictive narcotic, affected not only the mind of the user but the appearance as well. As one immersed oneself deeper within the Blackness, its malevolent power took a toll on the body. Some people suffer physical degradation because flesh and bone lacked the endurance to channel the immense power of the Blackness indefinitely. Sasha, for example, was deformed and had her body completely changed by the power of the Blackness, leaving her bald and pale.

Many Blackness' users experienced a change in the pigmentation of their eyes, as their normal eye color would transform into a luminous, sulfuric red. Often the skin would also lose pigmentation, becoming pale and mottled while veins became increasingly visible. The hair would also lose color, making it appear as though the Darksider was aging rapidly. The user's voice would also be altered, becoming a few pitches lower and raspier. However, this happens only if the person accepts the Blackness to their free will. There are a few exceptions that the Blackness actually left the people more attractive to match their personalities. People like Heis, Diabla the Qliphoth Tyrant and Michael Langdon had their appearances changed to something more attractive to complete their sophistication and calm personality.

In time, the corruption could go beyond mere cosmetic details and directly impair physical abilities. Lord Boros of was a galaxy overlord for most of his life, and embraced the Blackness under its decaying influence until he eventually became incapable of movement and needed support from a cyborg exoskeleton in order to survive. Another extreme case of dark side corruption was Shiva, whose extensive study of the Blackness led to immense physical degradation and eventually a fatal terminal condition and had to transfer her soul to other bodies in order to survive. The worst case of this transformation would be Wolf, who was completely consumed by the Blackness both mentally and physically. Eventually, he became an aberration of the Blackness that existed only to consume life.

The Blackness could have an even greater effect on the mind, as the user often stopped trusting people and become quick to anger. Continued immersion in the Blackness could even result in insanity, as in the case of children like Kruel Rose. It should be noted however, that the individuals who went insane were all disturbed or traumatized even before their conversion, and the Blackness simply exacerbated their conditions.

While the Blackness could destroy a body, it was also capable of sustaining one. The hateful, passionate, determined energies of the Blackness were so powerful that it could prevent death for a body that was far past the point of death for a normal being. Humans like Burckhardt survived for almost three centuries. Klarion had his skin pale and become a slender figure. However, people like Zarc had is flesh "cracked and scarred" and he had "several thousand fractures in his skeleton,". He survived through the power of hate and called upon the Blackness to make him near-immortal.

Usage in the Croatoan[]

"Humans are incurably morbid, or haven't you heard? However, this thing named the Blackness shall become their new cure. For the Croatoan."
— Michael Langdon

The corruptive influence of the Blackness had appealed Michael Langdon, who is completely aware of the effects of the Blackness. Desiring to became more powerful due to his own greedy nature, Michael did not hesitate to use his own body for the experiment and consumed the Blackness. Michael eventually became even more powerful after that, and even worse, he even used it in the enhance the power of the Croatoan Virus.

With the help of Phyllis Peach, Atticus Nevins and Melancholia, Michael used his own blood that was tainted by the Blackness, the blood of several variety of Croatoan victims as well as the blood of Carl Robinson and Christine Van Bilj to merge together with Croatoan Virus, creating a new and improved version of Croatoan that would turn everyone infected into insane monsters known as Supreme Croatoan, all the while keeping some of their sanity as well as their capability of speech.

However, it was soon proven unexpectedly that its effect would be neutralized by Dawn's Early Light, the purifying light magic Divine Weapon made by Selina Strawberry, which was used as the cure during the Second Croatoan Rampage. Selina becomes the only perfect merger with the Supreme Croatoan and becomes immortal as a result, with no sign of Black Demon appearing from her.

Fear[]

Petelgese summoning the Authority of Sloth

As the Blackness was often associated with darker emotions, the Black Demons were portrayed to Triggers Hell as savage and even more evil for they were made of evil unlike Demons and Devils that were beings able to think by themselves. Gods like Liz, the Goddess of Light, disagreed so strongly with the purpose of the Blackness that they distanced themselves from anything possibly related to the Blackness, leaving Ara be until she brought the Blackness to their world after three insane invasions. They also made it part of their mission to neutralize any and all practitioners of the Blackness by whatever means necessary, though killing them was usually a last resort.

For the most part, the Gods forbade members romantic attachments, relationships with their families, and any type of action based on anger to avoid being corrupted by the Blackness. These limits came from the belief that those Gods who had deep personal attachments with loved ones also had motivation to use the power of the Magic selfishly for protection, personal enrichment, or the pursuit of more power.

Many—especially those who had embraced the dark side—believed this to be a result of fear. Often those who held this belief looked down upon the Gods and other Lightsiders, criticizing them for cowardice and inaction. Many Blackness and even a few Devils mocked the Gods for claiming to strive to understand the magic while refusing to study everything it had to offer. They claimed that the Gods and Light Magicians scrutinized a single layer of the magic, while they dug beneath layer after layer, understanding and evolving. Many Blackness' users have expressed this viewpoint.  As the Blackness was often associated with infamous historical figures, such as Idea of Evil, the Blackness and Ara Astaroth it is unsurprising that many throughout the omniverse would harbor such animosity to its users.

Blackness' Powers[]

"To those of you who believe they are immune to any of these stages... I say you are already victim to the Blackness' seductive tendrils, and urge you to listen as you have never listened before... The Blackness is just like Ara Astaroth... It's seductive... Not by appearance like her but by psychologically bringing you to the dark path."

Ara creates the Blackness after creating her Azarath Claw

Those who wielded the Blackness found many abilities of the magic easier to use, with some magic powers available only to Black Demons. Light-side magicians could use some dark-side abilities, but most preferred not to since dark-side abilities had aggressive, destructive, or perversely manipulative tendencies just like Ara Astaroth had.

The Cure - Over-23[]

Fire Emblem Three Houses - Female Byleth - All Cutscenes English 0418

Katya studying ways to purify the Firenza Junior's blood

The cure of the Blackness was developed by Katya in Prime Earth shortly before the end of the Third World Wa. Through Katya's "false" taunts and tricks on Carl Robinson, Katya could extract drops of his blood during their fight. However, it was much later revealed that Katya, like always, assuming the position of a hateful jerk for the sake of others. The reason why Katya provoked Carl so much to the point the remnants of Malice of Moloth would show up revealing its last fragments and what remains of the Blackness in Carl's blood to study new ways to free one from the control of the Blackness. Through her studies, Katya came to the conclusion that Elemental Armateus was an useful weapon but it was too flawed when it would cost the lifespan of its user to clean a limited amount of Blackness that would later come back with even more intensity, therefore it was not perfect. She also would use other examples like Dawn's Early Light but the Light could only purify hosts would were not entirely consumed by the Blackness and would temporarily weak the Blackness from those who are already fully consumed by it as seen when Future Selina Strawberry tried to purify Vira Hermes with the light but to no avail. For centuries, Yuri Barnes and countless other mages studied ways to purify the Blackness and free its hosts from their imminent transformation in Black Demons but all failed.

Grigot

The definitive cure for the Blackness; Over-23 Blackness consuming the darkness of the Blackness

However, thanks to Carl who was unknowingly used as a guinea pig by Katya, the latter could find the necessary structure to combat the Blackness by creating her "own" Blackness based in Firenza Junior's blood that was unique once he was born with it and was a part of him instead of being an alien element.

Using her Overlady's spell, her Purifying magic and days of rewriting the very pillar of Overlady spell to force a conjunction between the Blackness from Carl's blood, Katya could create a form of special and unique Blackness that would prey, aka, "purify" the original Blackness while the Overlady cells inside of the experimental Blackness that would reverse the physical, mental and astral state back to a previous state when the effects of the Blackness did not exist, thus terminating it from inside out. Following the erasure of the original Blackness, the experimental Blackness would leave the original body and go other bodies to eat the original Blackness until it eventually would disappear over time once they had consumed too much Blackness.

The Experimental Blackness made out of Carl's blood would be later proved to be useful even against mortals and even divine beings that were transformed into Black Demons by the Blackness, even normal demons whom were consumed by the Blackness like Oriax Wheelahr could be purified of the evil element, reverting their bodies to back to normal. According to Katya, once the Overlady is activated within the Experimental Blackness, it will act in set with the Purifying altered Blackness that would consume the original Blackness while the Overlady will rewound the physical, psychological and spiritual state to previous physical states, undoing modifications from past and reverting them back to normal.  While Carl was born with the Blackness, the Purifying magic could eat all his cells and replace it with new ones as she had blood samples of normal human in her laboratory, that would multiply and replace his blood cells as well as his very DNA itself. The name of this cure was called Over-23 Blackness by Yuri Barnes, as Katya, its true creator would never be able to see Carl and centillions of others victims healed since she left the Prime Earth to continue her journey of vengeance against Sequined Sadist and the already-defeated Ara Astaroth.

Much to his dismay, Katya never revealed it was her who created the cure, leaving all the credits to Carl who was the key to the cure, but he could not accept how Katya did things while carrying the hate and disdain of billions on her back, and thus, just like every person who knew who Katya truly was, he wanted to save her and ask for her forgiveness for trying to kill her multiple times when she clearly had no intention of doing the same and his ultimate trust (something he did not give to many people until now since his traumatic experience of being betrayed by his own comrades), however, much to his dismay, the likes of Michael Langdon and Apostles of the Slavery continued active in the already destroyed Prime Earth and became more of annoying obstacles to Carl who had debit to pay to Katya.

By the time of LOTM: Destiny, 5,000,000,000 years in the future, all the Blackness of the Lynenta Omniverse disappeared thanks to this cure that saved countless planets, universes and even multiverses as the cure was deployed with cooperation of Reality CouncilParadiseRatatoskr, New Conglomerate and New Republic of Deus.Ex.Machina Industries, forcing the Idea of Evil to act and send its off-spring, the Darkness, to once again infect all Multi-Universes. This would later affect Ara Astaroth herself once she was revived by the Cult of Ara but was extremely weak to the point of depending of using a mortal body to stay alive in the mortal plane once all Blackness was gone.
