Shulk (シュルク, Shuruku; English dub: /ˈʃʊlk/) is the main protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles. He likes to think things through and is very methodical in his approach to most situations. Early details show that he is able to wield the Monado due to the fact that he was one of the only known survivors on a previous expedition to retrieve the sacred weapon. He first acquires the sword when his home, Colony 9, is attacked. His first act upon acquiring the destined weapon is to fight for an end to the war with the Mechon and avenge Fiora. He set off on a journey through the Bionis with his best friend Reyn.
During his journey, he met new friends such as Sharla, a medic who is also a rifle specialist, Melia, crowned princess of the High Entia who specializes in Ether spells and Riki, a bumbling but heartfelt and loyal chosen hero of the Nopon. Dunban later on joins the group after a recovering a little bit.
Shulk gained the ability to see into the future from the mysterious sword, the Monado. It helped him and his group out many times during their journey.
Several startling discoveries were also made, such as the Mechon gaining Holmes as pilots, such as Fiora, who was thought to be dead but was brought back and was used as a vessel for the Mechonis deity, Meyneth, as she piloted the Mechon, Nemesis. Another startling discovery they made is the Mechon, which Shulk addressed as Metal Face, was piloted by one of Dunban's friends, Mumkhar, who was more than happy to turn against his race because he was jealous with Dunban. Metal Face remorselessly murdered Melia's father, the Emperor, who knew that he would die at that moment. This, in turn, fed on Shulk's rage, but some of that was taken away the second he discovered that Fiora was still alive.
Shulk and the rest of their group decided to make their way towards Mechonis to deal with the Mechon threat from the source. However, along the way, they met up with Fiora again who wanted to meet with and speak with Shulk, but Mumkhar followed her and interrupted them before they had the chance to converse. He threatened to harm Fiora as a way of forcing Shulk to surrender the Monado, which did work.
