The Salamanders are major protagonists in Warhammer 40k, and are universally seen as the most heroic and compassionate of all the Astartes Legions. The 18th Legion of the Imperium of Man, they were originally known as the Dragon Warriors and are lead by their Primarch Vulkan and specialize in smith, fire weaponry and civilian rescue. One of the 20 original First Founding, the Salamanders serve as a beacon of hope and kindness in the otherwise bleak, brutal grimdark of the 40th millennium. Tragically, the Salamanders suffered unimaginable losses during the Horus Heresy, falling victim to the Drop Site Massacre. Their numbers extremely reduced, they nonetheless remain steadfast loyalists and paragons of courage and kindness.
