Onix is a large rock snake Pokemon. It is a dual Rock/Ground type Pokemon, which means that Electric attacks don't work on it. Onix is known very well for being one of the Pokemon owned by Gym Leader Brock. It had been very iconic ever since.
At first, Onix didn't have an evolutionary line until Generation II when it is discovered that it can evolve into Steelix, a dual Ground/Steel type Pokemon, when it's traded away while holding a Metal Coat.
Onix has a magnet in its brain. It acts as a compass so that this Pokémon does not lose direction while it is tunneling. As it grows older, its body becomes increasingly rounder and smoother.
Its name is a corruption of onyx, a mineral.
Ultimate Story[]
Like the anime, Brock owns an Onix. However, he never used it once against Ash considering that Brock relinquished his duties as the Pewter City Gym Leader due to having to take care of 10 younger siblings. Thankfully, Fox took his place.
