Young Maria as a Mafusa Gangster

"Today, at this time of war, no other ways could be carry out other than paying violence unto violence. However, remember this: We are outlaws, not criminals. Outlaws have codes, while criminals will do whatever they want without any standards. This frail flesh of mine shall be devoted to God so that I can unleash punishment upon sinners who wage the war and walk on this planet freely. Some people just escape the law and go free after they committed their crimes. It is unforgivable. Stand by me, my family, and we will get through thick and thin whenever the situations gets sour. Corruption and disgrace have no place on Earth! As the core of the Arzonia Family, I will make people like Eckidina KnightWalker, the root of all evil in this war, to pay for what they have done!"

María Pirotecnia de Arzonia y Rodríguez (short for Maria Arzonia, also known as the Angel of Flame, the Redeemed One and the Lady Saint) is an anti-hero/supporting antagonist in LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow & Sword of Kings Crossover - The Corbin Files and will be a supporting protagonist in the overall LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow, especially in the upcoming LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow - Anti-Christ Saga and the upcoming LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow - Moloch Saga (Final Saga) as a holy spirit.

Outside the main story, Maria also serves as the protagonist in many spinoffs, particularly being the main heroine of LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow Spin-Off - Firenza Junior, a supporting protagonist of LOTM: Sword of Kings AA Final - Eckidina Arc, and the female protagonist of the upcoming LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow Spin-off - Scorched. Her Astaroth Future counterpart from another timeline serves as the protagonist of LOTM: Los Reina de Corazónes.

As a teenager

Maria was a half-Spaniard illegitimate daughter of a Mafusa Gang member who abandoned his lover. She lived together with her Godmother, Vento of the Front, after her mother died, but her elder half-brothers later kidnapped her and forced her to join Mafusa Gang, where she suffered from her brother's abuse and torture for years until she finally snapped and killed her brothers. After she was snapped, Maria went on a rampage through her way made of death by causing bombing and fire in the places where criminals were gathered, causing deaths of hundreds of criminals but also saved lives of many kidnapped children and ordinary citizens.

Because of the Unknown Figure's attack, Maria was burned and disfigured, but she was later reconstructed into a Cyborg and became a puppet of the KnightWalker Family. Later, she regained her memory and sacrificed herself to save Acqua of the Back from Aleister Crowley by killing herself in a self-explosion, forcing Crowley to retreat. Her soul moved to the Heaven and became a Spirit Guide. Her name was later carried on by many Catholic Church members who was freed from the control of Michael Langdon, who revealed himself to be the Unknown Figure who stole the Grand Grimoire.

Maria as a Cyborg

After her heroic sacrifice, Maria was held as a divine figure by a group of Catholic Rebels who rebelled against Michael Langdon's rule over the Church. In Firenza Junior, Maria later revived as a Holy Guide Spirit like Sister Mary Eunice before her.

Although still having her bad temper remained as a result of her traumatic childhood, Maria now turned much better and much more matured. She valued kindness and bond before anything else, becoming a motherly and sisterly figure to her own comrades. Under her care, all those fragile Catholic Rebel factions united together under a single faction, La Nueva Familia de Arzonia, where Maria started a new family for herself as arguably the last living member of the original Arzonia Family.

Valuing love as family and believed humanity are never beyond redemption, Maria raised her rebellion against those false hypocrites and corrupt officials who lies to innocent public. Even though she was later betrayed by Carl Robinson, whose parents was killed by her under the coerce of the Arzonia Brothers, Maria still believed that Carl could be saved and showed him both remorse and affection, struggling herself to get Carl out of Melancholia's corruption, so that he can gain his redemption. Using her actions, Maria showed Carl that the world also has its kind side aside from its cruel side.

Teresa Linares (ToA)

The Cyborg persona of Maria, under the brainwashing of Eckidina KnightWalker, starts as a self-righteous and murderous Knight Templar, who targets on many people she deemed guilty or not following her own request, including Acqua of the Back who was framed by Eckidina as a cold-blooded murderer. Under the belief that she represents the fire of God, Maria went on to an rampage even worse than before, involving herself on the KnightWalker Family's side and hunted down Acqua, bringing more troubles to the Anglican Church and the forces of the British Royal Family.

According to Kanzaki Kaori, Maria's Cyborg Persona had killed many Londoners - including innocent people - and not all of the people in the United Kingdom honored Maria as a martyr. Some condemned her as a sinner due to the Cyborg persona she was wearing, under the manipulation of Eckidina KnightWalker, which caused many people died. Criminals in England also blamed her for killing their collaborators and ruining their crime business.

Therefore, as the battle of London started, and with Melancholia, Cain Knightlord and Fiamma of the Right used the Dome and the bounty posters to tempt the entire city into a huge scale of manhunt against heroes in all sides, many citizens actually followed in order to capture Maria and her Family for Melancholia so that they could seek vengeance, believing Maria was guilty. In spite of this, Maria still tried to protect them and helped many of them when the criminals tried to kill all of the targets (against the citizens' will) and citizens to gain profits from Melancholia's side, finally earning their trust as she still believed in humanity had their good side despite so many wrongdoings.

Maria with MPS' CR-Unit

Maria lamented that her Cyborg form had harmed many people, and then she returned back from the dead not only to stop Michael and Eckidina, but also making repents towards her sins, which eventually moved Kaori and made them friends. Later, the crimes of Cyborg Maria were rightfully pinned on Eckidina KnightWalker, and the remaining citizens in the United Kingdom now considered Maria as a martyr instead of a sinner, with Maria herself being just another sacrificial lamb in Eckidina's evil plan to wage war on Earth.

Maria also admitted to Carl that if she never met Vento of the Front, who showed affection and love to a poor girl like her, she'll become as cruel as Aki Honda as well. Maria's actions and affections not only defrosted Carl's frosty nature and made him into a better person, but also made lost souls like Sumireko HanabusaMagilouMatt Butcher, Abel Nightroad, Esther Blanchett, Adam Frankenstein and Eva Frankenstein to be together in somewhere like family, where everyone respect and love each other. She became the spiritual leader of Catholic Rebels and an ally of Katarina Couteau in her fight against the evil reign of terror from the KnightWalker Family.

After the destruction of The Fallen's Essence and Diabla the Qliphoth Tyrant, Maria and her friends, including Matt Butcher, tracked an escaped Michael back in time and went into Sleepy Hollow, where she helped Ichabod and Abbie in defeating Michael Langdon, before she unraveled many sealed secrets of the past and helped in the final battle against Moloch.

Maria as a Black Demon

Overall, Maria is one of the most recurring heroines in CIS Productions storylines (especially in the Magic Side), and she later even became the one with the Team Witness and later the Ratatoskr in order to stop Moloch and later Balam Alliance. After the Balam Alliance's total destruction with the demise of Deus.Ex.Machina Industries Empire, Maria becomes a Guardian Angel and also an ally to New Republic of Deus.Ex.Machina Industries.

#-A Tropes[]

  • 13 is Unlucky: The most severed tragedy happened on her was the event when Maria was burned severely by Michael and later was made into a Cyborg by Eckidina. It happened on Maria's 13th birthday, and it was considered as one the darkest and saddest events in The Corbin Files.
  • 100% Adoration Ratings: Downplayed. Only within her faction, Maria is sympathized, adored, respected and protected by many who know about the troubling past of hers and her true wish to atone her past sins and end the whole world’s suffering. Even Michael Langdon respects her and calls her not only an intimidating threat for him but also his most worthy opponent, being proud of himself to have an enemy like her. Nevertheless, outside her faction, mostly, she is known as a Heroine With a Bad Reputation.
  • A God I Am Not: While she herself is never a Goddess even after her transformation, Maria more than often call herself as a human. She only calls herself the Angel of Flame, or simply an angel, while confronting really dire situations, serious enemies and/or giving her own Badass Boast. It's a far cry from the first Arc Villain in Saga AAKanon Rihavein, who is a narcissistic misanthrope with a serious god complex.
  • Lady.Maria.of.the.Astral.Clocktower.full

    In LOTM: Destiny

Accidental Murder: By accident, Maria killed St. Parcifal, a holy knight of the Catholic Church, and she felt tormented due to such action, which drove the Catholic Church on her while her brothers left her to take the blame. As a Cyborg, Maria also man-slaughtered many citizens (off-screen) in her search for Acqua of the Back, and she wasn't in her own free will at that time.
  • The Ace: Maria is considered to be one of the most powerful and brave warrior in the Guide Spirits, and she is also the leader of the Catholic Rebels, being the one who united all of the separated rebel forces in three major Christian Churches together into a war against one single enemy force - the KnightWalker Alliance.
  • Action Girl: She often takes actions when necessary although she's still more prone to being the Strategist. It all depends on the situations.
  • Action Mom: Particularly in LOTM: Destiny when she is already an adult Guide Spirit and adopted a daughter. Even 5 billion years later, she still strong as ever, mainly because of her past battles with Balam Alliance that put her value and strength in game.
  • Achilles' Heel: Being a Spirit Guide actually makes her weaker to the Blackness, and even touching Ara Astaroth herself in their fight of slaps ended up turning her into an insane Black Demon.
  • Action Pacifist: Despite being an Arzonia, a descendant of a greedy crime family prone to violence and insanity, Maria wishes for peace for all and hates that her original family's crime empire caused so much distress. Because of this, the first thing after Maria takes over her corrupt relatives' former estates of grandeur - probably hundreds of them - is to turn them into hospitals, schools and war orphanages. Maria also splits the remaining fortune amongst those who were kind to her and/or volunteered to join her rebellion. Maria actually ends up being one of the underworld's most formidable enemies as her way of Robin Hood actually caused them financial troubles. Maria's actions in Spain gives Mafusa Gang its greatest blow ever since the death of Aki Honda, Tomoo and Arzonia Brothers, this time on finance instead of leadership.
  • Adaptational Expansion: Originally, Maria was set to return in Anti-Christ Saga, but her roles was greatly expanded as soon as her return was pulled back to Firenza Junior. It also made her the archenemy of Michael Langdon.
  • Adaptational Modesty: Downplayed. Maria's old script counterpart has her much more abrasive and feisty after her descent into vigilante works, but the later story made her much more modest and elegant. However, some abrasive side of hers also popped out in time as she tried to act elegant and cheery. Violence is inside her veins, after all.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Her development of intelligence in Firenza Junior made her from a Knight Templar heroine in action into a more strategic character who's more prone to strategies.
  • Adorkable: Especially during her private time with Matt, Maria can have Cuteness Proximity as well as social awkwardness popping at times even though she tends to be mature and sophisticated. Her Comically Serious tendency also helps.
  • A Friend in Need: The major reason that people supports Maria, instead of her self-proclaimed "fundamental" sister Guinevere Arzonia, is because Maria is loyal and selfless, always trying to help people in the flesh and trust her friends. This is something Guinevere never capable of doing so due to her selfishness.
  • Alice Allusion: Her code name, Corazon (Heart), and her bad temper are both references to the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, albeit Maria is not a tyrant or a villain at all. Even so, she uttered the Queen’s catchphrase by saying, “OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!” to FOLIE.
  • All for Nothing: Cyborg Maria was plunged into her Heroic BSOD as well as Villainous Breakdown as soon as she snapped out of the brainwashing, realizing her so-called pursuit towards justice against Acqua of the Back was nothing but a mere fabrication created by Eckidina, and Maria also killed people in her ways during being brainwashed. This was the main motive for her to sacrifice herself to atone her sins.
  • All-Loving Hero: She's fond of all life on Earth and will feel rue pain when she can't protect those she cared about. Even knowing there's a dark nature within humans, Maria still believes in humanity and its bright side, no matter what, since she herself witnessed humanity's kindness by herself, making her an idealist hero. Even so, her love has limits, for she often rebuked several hateful villains and told them how much she hate them.
  • All Women Are Prudes: Maria never talks about having sex, and she hates lewd words, trying to control her inner desire and living like a nun. The most pivotal reason that she keeps her own personal space between her and Oriax Wheelahr is Oriax's lewd personality that utterly annoyed her, even though she consider Oriax as a friend of hers.
  • And This is For...: In her final battle against Michael in Anti-Christ Saga, Maria cried this out with tears and madly attacks Michael for killing Carl Robinson, Frank Irving, Nick Hawley and most importantly, Abbie Mills.
  • Angelic Beauty: After she returned back as a Spirit Guide.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Four years before Firenza Junior, she was forced to kill Carl's parents when facing her brothers' torture, but only after Carl's parents allowed Maria to kill them that Maria killed them with regrets.
  • Anti-Villain: Type I, in a Woobie variety.
  • Apologizes A Lot: She's more than apologetic when things never goes according to her plan, blaming herself for her own negligence a lot of times (even if it wasn't really her fault). She also apologizes to Katarina, Lucas and Tomas by bowing again and again in Tales of A Lost Hero - Part 2 for the Arzonia Family destroyed all of the Hands of Apocalypse satellites and made the three's efforts in vain (despite Matt did a good thing).
  • Apron Matron: A younger example. She's the leader of La Nueva Familia de Arzonia and serves as a Team Mom to everyone in her new family.
  • Arch-Enemy: Four of the main villains are considered as such to her, but the first one on the following list is the most prominent one.
    • All of the participants of 13 Tribulations are considered to be such to Maria, but she is particularly the greatest arch-nemesis to Michael Langdon (while Moloch is the Arch-Enemy of Ichabod Crane), as Maria and Michael shared similar characteristics in intelligence and past, but Michael eventually evolved into a heartless and twisted monster who deems to turn the whole world into Hell on Earth, while Maria comes back as a Spirit Guide to stop him.
    • Ever since their fight in Scorched spin-off, Maria considers Vanifer as such as well, since they shares similar abilities of Elemental Fire, but Vanifer's power awakened much earlier than Maria's power, making all of Vanifer's attack not only more fierce but also more effective. On the other side, Vanifer develops a fond and respect towards Maria's warrior spirit and tries to persuaded her into joining her cause, saying that Maria is a Worthy Opponent.
    • She is also this one to Dark Arzonia after her arrival into Sleepy Hollow. Dark Arzonia considers Maria as a Worthy Opponent with curiosity rather than hatred. However, it's later revealed that Dark Arzonia was Phyllis Peach on Planet Sorensen-444, who was manipulated by her mainstream counterpart to use Planet Sorensen's Stone of Wisdom to steal Sorensen! Arzonia's body in the first place. Once she had acquired Maria's body and power, she let the Rebels brutalized the Maria in Phyllis' body for "treachery" (pretending her to be Phyllis) before killing Maria's family for nothing other than spite. Learning the last part pushes Mainstream Maria into a flying rage and she starts viewing Dark Arzonia as an archenemy thereon.
    • In Sabbat Saga, where Michael is already defeated, Maria considers Sascha Vykos as such since this vicious vampire the one who influenced the past of her friends, including but not limited to Matt Butcher, Abel Nightroad, Noelle Bor and Krans Romа́n Tsarskiy. Also, Maria is amongst those Elemental Spirit Guides in John Dee's prophecy of destroying Vykos and their spirit once and for all.
  • Ascended Extra: Maria once had a little yet memorable appearance for five episodes and became an Ensembled Darkhorse in the CIS Productions. She was later becoming an inspiration for the rising Catholic Rebels, whose name appeared in the trailer and the premier of LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow Spin-Off - Firenza Junior and served as a symbolic figure who was only mentioned. Her return was made, but it was once served in Anti-Christ Saga. However, the return of Maria was much earlier than original planned, as she returned as a main character from the second episode of Firenza Junior, and she even became the Big Good of the story with comparable roles to the story's titular Rogue Protagonist.
    • Maria's return also greatly altered the story's overall theme, with its theme from Carl Robinson's seeking for his past secret and undergo a Character Development, to a battle against Michael and Melancholia that was instigated by the united Catholic Rebels, thanks to this lady messiah in their mind. She also served as a catalyst to invoke the Story Theme of redemption, as she made many people (even including herself) to go under a Character Development, even redeeming some of them.
  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: After her physical body being destroyed, Maria's soul later returned back as a Spirit Guide, who became angelic and much more powerful, also becoming an immortal being.
  • Asexuality: Maria Arzonia is one of the few main casts of both LOTM: Sword of Kings and LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow with confirmed asexuality, with herself not interested in sex in spite of being rather appealing. It is soon revealed that she repressed the feeling and focused more on her belief, study and career. Her relationship with Carl, Yuri and even Matt are Platonic.
  • Author Appeal: According to Officer Candy Apple, Maria Arzonia fits his own type of female protagonist of a story - strong-willed, brave, smart, kind-hearted, reliable, and above all, never prone to Ms. Fanservice.
  • Aww, look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Maria assisted Matt and protected him from Guinevere as she was aiming to Matt, and the two fought against Guinevere in as a battle duo, trying to protect each other from Guinevere's attacks and occasionally asked each other whether they're fine. Patriarch Krans also joined the fight as the three worked together to surround Guinevere in a manner of carousel, fighting together to show how a true family really is to this self-proclaimed Fundamentalist. Maria also shown to be at the front in her fight with Guinevere.
  • Ax-Crazy: Maria herself is not insane and sadistic, but she can almost be such whenever she gone enraged, indicating that her brothers' blood is running inside her veins. Her Cyborg Form and Black Demon Form is a good example for the terrifying occasions when the hidden family madness running inside Maria's pumping arteries gone wild.

B Tropes[]

  • Back From the Dead: After she became a messiah figure held by the rising rebels in the Catholic Church against Michael Langdon, Maria returned back to life as a Spirit Guide and unites the once loose rebels into a united faction of Catholic Rebels.
  • Badass Adorable: Maria is extremely lovely, beautiful and pleasant, but still she is a skilled fighter who has power and short temper. Her cuteness is added by her Adorkable moments and Cuteness Proximity.
  • Badass Bookworm: She's just fond of reading books, and she also helps in doing research in the files inside the late August Corbin's archive room and Agency 355, respectively.
  • Badass Boast:
    • "Therefore, when the proletariat's was oppressed by elitists, when the citizens was pressed by warmongers, they shall arise and fight against those unfair rules! Even a nest of ant shall make a dam leaked! Even a part of iceberg out of ocean brought down a ship! Even..."
    • "Today, at this time of war, no other ways could be carry out other than paying violence unto violence.
  • Badass Bookworm: Maria often plunges herself into library and reads, often in military strategies and cultural knowledge, making herself more educated and intelligent.
  • Bastard Angst: Her status as an illegitimate child was one of the reasons she was treated as a servant who was abused by her half-siblings, causing her to be depressed and agonized for four years in her old, dark and evil family, causing her to live in solitude.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: Maria doesn't have to breathe in the air since she's a holy spirit, and she is naturally immortalized, making her immune to vacuum.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason Maria found Matt as her primal champion is that she met him in her childhood, when she was bullied and left alone in cold rain, after Mafusa Gang's attack in London when Raizen High School Arc took place. She met Matt, who was on a travel and unbeknownst of her identity, gave her his coat and umbrella to Maria, since he find her a poor little girl. Maria then remembered Matt's face in spite of not knowing his name. She later met Matt and treated him with high regards, eventually revealing that she was the little girl in the rain and tried to help Matt in order to show her gratitude.
  • Beauty, Brains and Brawn: If you think about it, she can easily be the three but she shares this with the two main heroines of LOTM: Sword of Kings. Imperia Deamonne as Beauty, Maria Arzonia as Brains and Katarina Couteau as Brawn.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness / The Beautiful Elite: Despite not thinking herself as beautiful, Maria is amongst one of the prettiest and well-proportioned female character in the story, as well as one of the kindest. People like Matt, Albert and Pedro all deemed Maria as "gorgeous". Carl later commented on Maria's beauty, calling her like a forest elf - as a compliment.
  • Beauty is Never Tarnished: Averted thrice. In The Corbin Files, Maria was disfigured by the severe burnt she suffered due to Michael Langdon's attack, before she was constructed into a mindless Cyborg. In Firenza Junior, particularly London Battle and the final battle against Melancholia, she suffered from dirt, dust and bruise in the former, and frostbite and demonic transformation in the latter. In Kiss of Death, her body swollen as a result of her CN-Unit armor's side effect. However, she went through all of them and returned to her better form.
  • Benevolent Boss: Maria treats her underlings and friends as family and is quite fair to them. She never sees herself as a boss, but as their friend.
  • Berserk Button: A LOT of them. In Catholic Rebels, Maria had most of the Berserk Buttons than anyone else, and anything made her enraged shall resulted fatal consequences. Therefore, here is the rules according to the list on Matt Butcher's notebook, including:
    • Never call her birth mother a whore.
    • Never say profane words in front of her.
    • Never speak ill of anyone whom she considered as her family.
    • Never beaten or kill a closed one of hers in front of her.
    • Never do obscene things in front of her or on streets.
    • Never defile martyrs of whom she idolized.
    • Never harm innocent people in front of her.
    • Never try to control her family and friends with mind control.
    • Never say xenophobic words in front of her.
    • Never betray her and her family.
    • Never oppress the poor.
    • Never commit sexual assault or raping.
    • Never burn, kill and/or plunder the innocent people.
    • Never deceive her and/or manipulate her compassion.
    • And many, many more, and I am still finding out... ~ Matt Butcher
  • Be All My Sins Remembered: Maria considers her entire situation in Firenza Junior as something she deserves and feels that it will serve as her way to atone for all of her past sins.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Maria is nice, polite and sophisticated... usually, but don't tense her as she is quite a gunpowder like her short-tempered brothers. Pushing her Berserk Buttons, hurting those she cares about, and/or trying to call her an orphan that no one wants, will earn yourself horrifying results you'll never ever forget, from a Death Glare to, of course, earn yourself a Fallas festival.
  • Beware the Silly One: Um, Maria herself is not really silly, but she's always seen wearing her extravagant and puffy dress in Firenza Junior and Tales of a Lost Hero even she engaged herself into a battle, which is truly well-dressed and sophisticated during a battle. Akrak lampshaded this in Tales of A Lost Hero - Part 2 during her final confrontation against the Rogues.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Often appears as such, most notably in Tales of A Lost Hero - Part 2 when she saved Katarina, Lucas and Tomas from a large horde of zombies by burning them down when she met them in Morte.
  • Big Good: In Firenza Junior spinoff, whilst being one of the foremost Magic Side heroes also in Saga AA and LOTM: WoSH in confrontation against Michael.
  • Big Little Sister: Maria is younger than Guinevere Arzonia, but she's much taller than the latter.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Sort of Subverted. Maria is much younger than Magilou (unknowing to Maria herself since Magilou looked and behaved like a child to her) and other people in her new family, but she is quite protective to them. Maria is also pissed off whenever she saw them attacked.
  • Birds of a Feather: Maria shares similarities to many characters around her, usually her teammates and best friends, and she became friends with them due to the similarities (though not romantic), including:
    • With Carl — Non-romantic. Carl and Maria both suffered disturbing events that traumatized them and made them into bloodthirsty killers, and Maria saw herself as a catalyst in Carl's Start of Darkness. She then tried to save Carl and compared her act as saving herself, as this is a part of her atonement. She cannot force herself to see Carl go down into the abyss she once reached.
    • With Matt — Their goals are the same, they have tragic pasts and lost their beloved family, they are both lost souls, and they get serious about the same things. They also like to the same book - Don Quixote, and Maria often lampshades Matt as the book's titular protagonist. Then, they both let out an endearing chuckle because of it.
    • With Katarina — Non-romantic. Similar to what she sees on Carl, Maria sees her own reflection on Katarina, with both of them having tragic pasts and darker self. She also pities Katarina for her loss on Eugen, and she resents Akrak Couteau for not being a proper family towards her niece. Maria eventually helps Katarina to control her dark side, and she becomes a family to Katarina as well.
    • With Ichabod — Non-romantic. In a nutshell, Maria is like a reincarnation of ICHABOD HIMSELF as they both serves as leaders in their factions, both came back from the dead for the greater purpose, both being Defectors of Decadence, both being extremely protective towards their friends, both having ill feelings towards their father, and many more.
  • Blithe Spirit: Maria wants to see people smile, and thus she fights for bringing happiness upon the world shrouded under the shadows of the World War III.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: In LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow, Maria is blond (again), Abbie is brunette while Katrina Crane is redhead.
  • Break the Cutie: Her sanity started to slip as soon as she snapped after fed up with her brothers' instant abuse, becoming a relentless rogue in killing criminals and her brothers' collaborators (later revealed in Firenza Junior) to prevent them from doing crimes, but Michael Langdon's presence sadly stopped her and burned her into a state of dying. She turned disfigured and later became a Cyborg that was brainwashed by her later sworn enemy, Eckidina KnightWalker, into a sadistic and bloodthirsty Cyborg. She became much better after returning back as a Spirit.
  • Brother–Sister Team: Downplayed. The Arzonia Brothers forced Maria, who was more innocent and naive at the time, to commit cruel acts of arson and terrorism because they wanted to make her someone just like them.
  • Breakout Character: In the earlier draft, Maria's return back from the dead was much later than LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow Spin-Off - Firenza Junior, but her return in the said spinoff not only extended her appearance, but also highly expanded the scale of the spinoff.
  • Bodyguard Crush: With Matt Butcher.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Played for Black Comedy when Maria asked Nio which kind of death she'll prefer, "You preferred being ripped apart, burned away, or being ripped apart while burning away?" Nio then earned the third option while yelling she want none of them.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: She was infected by the Blackness and became a Black Demon after slapping Ara several times.
  • Broken Birds: Maria is definitely such, as she endured suffering ever since she met Arzonia Brothers who abused her frequently and even forced her to kill people. Many people also considered her as a child no one wants and scorned her, and Maria could only find solace in her Godmother's arms as well as her feelings in the presence of God Himself. Her hard exterior protects a broken interior, and she won't let anyone in because she's afraid she'll be hurt again.
  • Burn the Undead: In Tales of a Lost Hero, Maria destroyed a horde of zombies in Morte with heat.
  • Burning with Anger: She'll lose her cool (literally) when she gets angry, with her body temperature gone utterly skyrocketed to the point of burning other stuffs, like how she reacted in Morte when she realized that Akrak was about to destroy the core of Earth by blowing up Morte. Maria was so infuriated that she immediately summoned a huge fire sphere and launched it to Akrak's glass, trying to melt it down.

C Tropes[]

  • Cain and Abel: Maria is Abel to both Arzonia Brothers' Cains and Guinevere Arzonia's Cain, as she's fully innocent, selfless and kind while the rest of her known siblings are all sadistic and hateful scums amongst the humanity.
  • Celibate Hero: Maria often denies herself being romantic partners with Matt, and she won't be involved in any sexual relationship, although she wants to control her feelings as she worried that it'll make their disadvantage even worse. She finally confessed her feelings to Matt in the Battle of London, and the major reason she fell in love with Matt (in a sisterly way) is because of his kind attitude when he gave his coat to a child Maria in a cold rainy night 3 years ago, and still they maintains brother and sister relationships instead of sexual partners.
  • Chaotic Good: In Freedom Is Goodness type. Maria is the leader of Catholic Rebels and wants to free the Catholic Church from Michael Langdon's control and free the world from the Order of Terror's enslavement. She never treats herself as an authority or someone who can become a ruler. She also wants her place as the Spanish Queen for a temporal time, long enough to restore her country back to its glory and let the corrupt KnightWalkers and their allies to pay. She stated that would retire and return the throne to a better and more lawful person once the war is over, when the humanity is freed from the KnightWalker Family's enslavement. She believed herself to be a freedom fighter rather than a ruler
  • Character Development: Maria started as a tragic, bullied and abused girl turned into an anti-hero, but ended up a Fate Worse than Death until her own heroic sacrifice. However, her character later returns to become a kinder, more polite, more warm-hearted and more compassionate character that has more roles in the entire CIS Production’s Multi-Universe, particularly LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow. Her traumatic experience in Firenza Junior turned her more matured and realistic, and now her personality was a combination of her old self in The Corbin Files and her new self in the early stage of Firenza Junior.
  • Character Tics: Like her father, Maria often face-palms herself whenever she was embarrassed or annoyed. Like her brother Robert, she often gave others a Death Glare whenever she was angry. Her bow and curtsy are another recurring poses she often tends to do.
  • Christianity Is Catholic: She's a Spanish/Castilian citizen, and a devoted Catholic.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Is willing to jump into a missile zone to protect someone with her status and abilities.
  • Color Motif: Gold and White, fitting her holy theme.
  • Come Back Wrong: In The Corbin Files, Maria's presumed death, which happened after she was immolated by Michael, was already harsh enough, but it turned even harsher when Maria was turned into a Cyborg who was Brainwashed and Crazy, obeying Eckidina's order and trying to kill Acqua.
  • Come Back Strong: She became this after revived as a Spirit Guide in Firenza Junior, from a normal young girl into a much more powerful entity that serves God's justice and declares war on dark forces from unearthly realms.
  • The Comically Serious: The scale of her sense of humor is between Matt, a fully comedic Large Ham, and Carl, an 100% serious Blood Knight. Sometimes, Maria can let out some funny moments during intense fight, often combined with her Deadpan Snarker tendency.
  • Contralto of Danger: Especially after she became a Guide Spirit. She has a much, much deeper and calmer voice than Katarina and Imperia despite being younger than them at least in age. Her future counterpart pitched up, though.
  • Cool Big Sis: She is like a elder sister for Magilou (despite Magilou is much older than Maria, unbeknownst to the latter).
  • Cool Teacher: She serves as Katarina's mentor to help her mature herself and lock Elesis inside her mind.
  • Cry For the Devil: In-Universe. She mourned Vanifer after the latter accepted her demise in their final showdown, which is the very first time Maria mourned someone she deemed as a villain.
  • Cry Laughing: Frequently. In Firenza Junior, Maria was pressed into tears and laughter when she met Vento again alive and well, but tragically it cut short due to Michael's mind control (although Vento later regained her free will). In Tales of A Lost Hero - Part 2, after the Battle of Morte, Maria was glad to hear that Katarina see Ratatoskr and the Rogues as her family, and she laughed with tears in her eyes since she was overexcited to hear that. Overlaps with her also frequent Tearful Smile.
  • Cultured Badass: Earning well education from Vento of the Front, Maria is not just multi-linguistic and vitally resourceful, but also well-mannered and focuses more on strategy than actions. Unlike Katarina who's a Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass, and Imperia (after turning into a Cyborg) who's often too lazy to think, Maria tends to be thoughtful and acts as always functioning brains, in contrast to most of Spaniards who are known by their casual and relaxing lifestyle.
  • Cunning Linguist: She speaks many languages including English, Chinese (a little) and Spanish (her mother tongue) dependent on different situations. She's the only main ally of the Rogues who speaks Spanish.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Trapped in such a sticky situation in Maria's first battle against Vanifer and other three Elemental Prophets (who helped Vanifer and fought against Maria without honor) in Scorched spinoff is considered as such, since not only Maria was utterly overpowered by Vanifer, whose techniques is much more powerful and effective than Maria's, but also she was beaten by three other Elemental Prophets who are also powerful enough to dealt damage with her. In the end, Maria and Matt could only escape with the help of their friends while snatching the Lost Pages of Grand Grimoire with them.
  • Curse Cut Short: Very rarely she curses, and if she does, she'll cut it short, combined with Getting Crap Past the Radar concerning several times she went too angry and almost made a curse, like "one more FFFFFFFFFFFF---FREAKISH TIME" or "Oh, Sugar, Honey, and Ice Tea!" She's one of the people who never curses people, but that doesn't mean she can always stay like that. She just tries to control it in order to make no offense.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She said the flying droids in MPS facility was quite cute... and imagined them to be toys.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: To Carl, unwillingly. She was forced to kill Carl's parents and made him losing two of the few people that showed him kindness, driving him to cynicism and later made him one of her most bitter foes. She isn't proud of it and is tormented all the time after she discovered the truth.

D Tropes[]

  • Damsel Errant: She's the one who finds Matt Butcher and Carl Robinson in order to rebel against Michael's rule in the Catholic Church to restore it.
  • Dark and Troubling Past: Maria is a illegitimate daughter born to a poor woman and became an orphan not long after her birth, and she had been under her brothers' abuse ever since she was child, being forced to separate from her beloved Godmother. She suffered from all sorts of abuse and tease, along with the coerce of her brothers. Unwillingly, she became a Mafusa Gang member and killed Carl Robinson's parents with sheer remorse. Even after freeing herself from a dark family, Maria was still burned down to dying and became a Cyborg under Eckidina's projects.
  • Dashing Hispanic: She is a rare female example that fits the classic mold nonetheless, using a sword with grace.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Despite approving her friends in most of the times, Maria often criticized Matt in sarcastic way and her own sense of humor, but many others were snarked as well, usually those who are flamboyant and overconfident, like so:
    • - Bubbly: I, am the biggest fan of Selina Strawberry! Sister Strawberry is the best of us, and she cares me a lot! Therefore, I deserves to be the ringleader of her fan club! I deserves to be her "Queen of Sisters", end of story! Now, Arzonia, what would you do to flatter me?
    • - Maria: With my sympathies to someone who needs a serious wake-up-call.
    • Also this as a homage to Zhao Lirong's comedy drama:
      • (After Matt made a showoff in his single Tango performance, similar to a soldier holding a rifle while looking around...)
      • - Yuri: Is that what you called Tango?
      • - Maria: I call it "barbarian in a village".
  • Death Equals Redemption: She snapped out from Eckidina's brainwashing and realized she had gone too far, and then she sacrificed herself to save London and redeemed herself, ascending into Paradise to become a Spirit Guide and later returned back from the dead.
  • Death Glare / Kubric Stare: It's a like family tradition for an Arzonia. Like her obsession of tidiness from her big brother and her lean build from her third brother, Maria also has a quality from her second elder brother, Robert Arzonia, and that is his death glare (as described by Maria herself). Maria's rage is often shown by her dark and sinister glare as a warning that her patience is running out. In Tales of A Lost Hero - Part 2, Maria gave a death glare at Matt and Yuri when they started to fight on Franxinus over the problems on Carl and the Blackness, which even freaked Katarina and Lucas out even if they did nothing to make Arzonia mad. Then, all of them felt sorry and apologized to Maria instead of to Kotori, and Katarina & Lucas both felt Maria was far more scary than Kotori. See it for yourself.
  • Death Seeker: In The Corbin Files, after snapping out of Eckidina's brainwashing, Maria tragically maintained the memories of her wrongdoings under brainwashing. Drenched in guilt, Maria was so sad that she wanted to have herself killed to end her own misery, not wanting to harm innocent people. She later accepted her own sacrifice peacefully. Subverted when she's Back from the Dead, but still would sacrifice her own existence even if it means to bring freedom and security upon the whole world.
  • Declaration of Protection: She's extremely protective to those she considered to be family and friends, as she was thirst of feeling family love due to the dark and troubling childhood she endured. She's so madly protective that even someone laughing at her friends will push her Berserk Button at once.
    • "The executives and above in my group are my family members. Now, they're all I have. Anyone who dares to humiliate or harm at my family, at any degrees, shall learn a hard way in not to make me infuriated. Do you understand me?"
  • Defector from Decadence: Maria already intended to leave her old, corrupt family and the evil claws of Mafusa Gang since she saw them as corrupt and sadistically evil, believing that Vento of the Front, who showed her true kindness, is her only family alive. She later achieved this after becoming a Spirit Guide and intended to invoke this on other people, helping them from their miserable lives as much as she could.
  • Delicate is Beauty: Played with after her death as a KnightWalker Cyborg. Previously, she more wild and had no senses to restrain her tongue. But her return as a Guide Spirit put that Up to Eleven once she dressed herself in a more delicate and sophisticated dress and put limits to her wildness by behaving like a Ojou. Even in LOTM: Sword of Kings, compared to other female characters from the Rogues like Katarina, Imperia and Azul, she is far more composed and delicate.
  • Delicious Fruit Pies: Played For Laughs and overlaps Pie in the Face. Yuri accidentally smashed a cherry pie in Maria's face during a trivial argument with Matt. Maria was annoyed at first but soon forgives Matt as she found the pie very tasty.
  • Disappeared Dad / Parental Abandonment: Maria's own father is a disloyal creep, truly disloyal. He just left Maria's pregnant mother after Maria was conceived, revealing that he actually had a wife. Maria never considered her own father as her father, and she saw Acqua of the Back (who is far more responsible and caring to her) more like a father to her. Even so, she intends to leave her father alone without killing him when she found him becoming a broken drunkard on the street, crying in remorse.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Downplayed. In The Corbin Files, she serves as the secondary antagonist of Acqua of the Back’s storyline while under her Cyborg persona. Even so, she is not really the primary villain in the action, merely a pawn who was used against her own will. Played straight in Madness Sub Arc when she turned into a Black Demon and served as the last enemy Katarina fought before fighting against Ara.
  • Drowning My Sorrows / Drunk on Milk: Interestingly enough, as she was self-restraint from alcohol, Maria drank plenty milk as substitute during her grief over what she made Carl into, and her inability to save Noelle Bor. Black Humor ensued when she actually did drunk on milk, and it was implied that it made her one inch taller in the next course of weeks...
  • Does That Remind You of Something: Played for Laughs after her arrival to MPS base in Paris. Maria was stopped by two battle droids who demanded her identity. Maria pretended to be a Zero Numbers mercenary and spoke Spanish and tried to confuse the droids, but the droids asked why she was speaking Italian. This immediately made Maria remembered the awkward moment in Morte when she met Katarina, who reacted the same in Maria's Spanish words. This made her so infuriated that she roared "I'M NOT ITALIAN!!!" to the droid, sending them away with her voice.
  • Donut Mess with a Cop: In their stay in Sleepy Hollow, Maria and Matt particularly enjoy new brand of donuts from Happy Donut Shop, in contrast to Calvin and Katrina who always order plain sugar donuts.
  • Dramatic Drop: The next day after her tearful confession, Maria woke up and started to read, before she saw Carl cooked breakfast for her and called her first name. Shocked, Maria dropped her book when she saw Carl becoming so affectionate to her, before she smiled.
  • Dumb Blonde: Averted. She is quite smart and strategic, and her naivety and foolishness were just pretense to hide her sour side. In spite of this, Imperia Deamonne often insulted Maria as such, calling her "Stupid Blondia" with the word "blonde" spoken in Italian.
  • Dying as Yourself: Maria returned back to her human personality in her first demise and died in a redeemed sacrifice, which sent her towards Paradise due to her sacrifice and atonement.

E Tropes[]

  • Earn Your Happy Ending: By becoming a rebel as well as a Spirit Guide due to her heroic sacrifice as well as her will, Maria eventually gains a new family for her, a family better and much more loving than the old and corrupt crime family she lived in. After the start of New Republic of Deus.Ex.Machina Industries, Maria retired from her vigilante business and became a peaceful recluse away from public, but she continued to enforce justice modestly and witness new legends rising and falling due to her timeless nature, believing in humanity's future can move on even with every single obstacle it might face.
  • Education Mama: Almost like a motherly figure to Katarina. Particularly in Mafusa Gang's Revenge Sub Arc where Maria became worried with Katarina's weak mind that could be easily corrupted evil Social Expert. After the incident of the Red Moon Tyrant, Maria became a mother-figure to Katarina and began to educate her while training her to restrain her evil inner monster.
  • Elemental Powers: After returning back from death in her own way, Maria becomes a spiritual magician can manipulate element powers mainly connected to fire, lava, heat and light. She shares this abilities to Vanifer and Selina Strawberry, but Vanifer has her power awakened long before Maria had while Selina's forte in her Croatoan Form is not only fire, but also and actually gems and heavy metal
  • "El Niño" Is Spanish for "The Niño": Played For Laughs when Albert Apple described her as "a Spanish Warrior whose name is... something Spanish" and also this:
    • - Albert: "La Reina de la Corazones" means "The Reina of the Corazones", savvy? (got punched by Selina in his nose)
  • Enemy Mine: She was forced to work with her Arch-Enemy, Michael Langdon, in order to stop Diabla the Qliphoth Tyrant. Upon Diabla's demise, they both admitted to each other that their bargain was over.
  • Establishing Character Moment: She burned down Arzonia Brothers as retribution for their abuse as well as in order to stopping them from committing more crimes.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Ara Astaroth is probably the only girl who showed interest in Maria but if it's admiration or love, it was never really explained due to how complex the mind of Ara is towards emotions like love.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Maria is not beyond violence in doing things, but displaying gore will never be approved by her. She only approved these time while dealing with really evil humans like Nio Hashiri and Akrak Couteau, as she allowed Carl to rip Nio apart while she agreed to join the Rogues in order to kill Akrak for her destructive crimes.
  • Everything's Sparkly with Jewelry: Her earrings.
  • Evil Counterpart: The most notable example of Maria's Evil Counterpart is none other than Michael Langdon, but later Vanifer, Ara Astaroth, Guinevere Arzonia, Heis / Kanon Rihavein and Dark Arzonia came to the stage as well.
  • Expy: Character designs in her different age and forms are based on following characters: Teresa Linares from Tales of Berseria, Crimson Rose from Elsword, Lyndin from The Coiling Dragon comic, Doll & Lady Maria of Astral Clock Tower in Bloodborne and Lady Maria in Nioh. Some of her design were actually based on villains with prim figure. Her personality and experiences are based on Bridget Pike in Gotham, as well as Carrie White in Carrie.
  • Every Proper Lady Should Curtsy: Besides from bowing and shaking hands, Maria often curtsies to those superior to her and/or those she looks upon.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: In Unit-CM 130 sub arc, upon meeting Katarina in Morte with joy, Maria turned disappointed when she found out that Katarina is so idiotic that not only did Katarina failed to recognized her at first, but also saying that Maria was speaking Italian (even Lucas and Tomas knew that Maria was speaking Spanish). That was justified since Maria returned back in another form.

F Tropes[]

  • Face Death with Dignity: Accepting her sacrifice and close her eyes, thinking she was going to meet her mother again in Paradise.
  • Face-Heel Brainwashing: Becoming this after turning into Cyborg by Eckidina and later again when turned into a Black Demon by Ara. She was freed from both of them, fortunately.
  • Family of Choice: Maria believes a family is connected with bond instead of blood. In her mind, those who treats their relatives lovelessly (most notably Moloch, Akrak Couteau and Sascha Vykos) and/or doing plans against their will while claiming to care for them (most notably, Lord Helio) never deserves family. La Nueva Familia de Arzonia is formed from of this concept of true family love.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: She has the bluish-green eye of Robert Arzonia, her second brother, as well as his signature Death Glare.
  • Fan Disservice: Downplayed, implied and later mentioned, but never shown since it would be utterly disturbing to see. What hides beneath her sophisticated and tight dress? Bunches of never-fading scars and bruises she earned from her brothers and Michael Langdon when he set her a flame. The Spirit Guide form of Maria managed to hide it from mortals, but Katya could see through what Maria once suffered and was disturbed by her tragedy.
  • Far-Out Foreigner's Favorite Food: Her favorite dish is paella, an iconic Valencian dish.
  • Fatal Fireworks: Maria will uses explosives and fireworks as a part of her attacks, which is also an Arzonia family tradition connected to bombing, albeit Maria uses it not for crimes.
  • Female Angel, Male Demon: Maria is the Female Angel to Michael Langdon's Male Demon.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Often joins the chefs and learn cooking skills. In particular, her baking skills becomes wonderful during her training.
  • Fire Purifies: Her most efficient way of cleaning demonic filth are still... burn them.
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: With the Maiden of Flow (Noelle Bor) in Firenza Junior and Elemental Evil Saga (after Noelle was revived by John Dee's Spirit).
  • Flamethrower Backfire: In The Corbin Files, her major reason of being attacked and severely injured by Michael was that he damaged her fireproof suit and caused the fuel to leak. It caused her to be soaked in gasoline and eventually burned herself with her own flamethrower.
  • Foil:
    • To Carl Robinson. Both of them began as cheerful and noble characters, but had gone cynical and sour due to their traumatic and tragic experience, as well as being used by villains to achieve their goal. However, Maria was brainwashed with false memory prior to setting her target as Acqua of the Back, while Carl really has a bone to pick with Maria, since she really killed his parents (although he later realized it was enforced). As for their theme as well as their own abilities, Maria's ability is associated with light and fire, while Carl (particularly after he joined the side of Langdon Orphans) is associated with ice and darkness, and the two fills the Female Angel, Male Demon duo. In addition, Maria has a change in personality because she tries to atone her crime, while Carl make a little change to his predominate callous persona so that he can remain strong. Nevertheless, they both want to save the world for noble intentions, though Carl is willingly to sacrifice the unnecessary while Maria tends to protect the Needs of Many. Even Maria discovers she and Carl share so many differences, and both went into a path from victims to villains, causing her to relieve Carl from his corruption as her act of atonement and her own compensation for killing his parents, for real.
    • To Katarina Couteau of some sort, as Katarina is a Blood Knight focuses more on fighting in battles (fitting the overall style of LOTM: Sword of Kings) and Maria, despite a skilled magician and martial artist, focuses more on many strategies, including risking her own life alone into enemy territory (fitting the style of LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow where the strategy itself is more required against evil). Maria can also gather plenty of information and is good at exploiting her potential intelligence, while Katarina is weaker at gathering info. Also, when Katarina was enraged, her rage is more often prone to violence and often evolves into fighting, while Maria's rage often starts with death glare that gives chills to everyone in presence. Even so, this never erase the fact that both of them have their own dark and troubled past.
    • She is also this to Guinevere Arzonia. In spite of the psychopathy caused by Sascha Vykos in Arzonia ancestors, Maria actually tried to control it no matter if she had knowledge in its origin or not, pushing her own dark side down. However, Guinevere is aware of Vykos' curse upon Arzonia ancestors, but like the wicked Arzonia Brothers, Guinevere is fully drenched in her own psychopathy and relishes the pain she brought, as she believed it was for good. Both Maria and Guinevere claims to be justice, but Maria did help people for all the time as she believed it was a good way, while Guinevere brought nothing but pain to others while being so deluded that she thought she was cleansing scums. Also, Maria treasures family as a formation of bond, trying to reform them, but Guinevere scoffs Maria's new family and believes the crime family which the old Arzonia Family represents are good. However, unlike Maria who really cares about her sworn family and would not harm other innocent people, Guinevere has no hesitation in ruining other families and butchering her own blood relatives to achieve her selfish goals, showing her hypocrisy that she only valued herself, as her fundamental view on family is nothing but some lies to make people deceived by her and followed her.
  • Forced into Evil: Her entire childhood as a Mafusa Gang member and then a KnightWalker Cyborg shows her tragic past of being a nice girl forced into murder and killing that she never wanted. Fortunately, she was now relived from such misery.
  • Forgets to Eat: She often forgets to eat anything (only drink water in order to cool herself down) whenever she's devoted into her job.
  • Forgiveness: She has forgiven many enemies' dark past once she realized the reason they committed such evil, like Carl Robinson, Esther Blanchett, Oriax Wheelahr and Melancholia / Plaisir. However, her forgiveness has limits, as she won't forgive those who are truly unforgivable, like Michael LangdonJunko Enoshima, Guinevere Arzonia, Lord Helio and Akrak Couteau, etc. She even threw a blatant "I HATE YOU!" to Akrak.
    • (on Lord Helio and Phyllis Peach) "I still have a hard time forgiving Helio, but I won't ever forgive or pity Phyllis, who twisted him like this... even HARDER!"
  • Four-Star Badass: She's a very high-ranking commander of the Catholic Rebels and eventually their leader and messiah figure, a strategist who nearly beats Melancholia (albeit while Melancholia was still overconfident from her early victories), and she leads her troops from the front lines. It's no surprise that she's one of their best fighters.
  • From My Own Personal Garden: She has Poison Ivy as her advisor to rebuild gardens in Madrid and plants herbs as well as vegetables with 100% natural way.
  • Front-line General: Nearly always personally involved in the battles she commands.
  • Freudian Excuse: With her mother abandoned by her father and born as an illegitimate child, Maria suffers quite a lot in her childhood when she was forced to leave her beloved stepmother, Vento of the Front. Her life was completely ruined by Mafusa Gang members, particularly her brothers. Witnessing death and tragedy everywhere, Maria also blames the whole KnightWalker Alliance for the tragedy that brought many people - including herself - into a complete hellhole full of suffering and lies. In her rebellion, despite some personal revenge against Michael was inevitably existed, Maria tends to avoid personal reasons and fights for the others before herself.

G Tropes[]

  • Get the Crap Past the Radar: Maria is one of the few who never uses the profanity, but not because she's perfectly polite, but because she wanted to control herself to be more composed. Therefore, she tried to avoid cussing when she was angry and almost let obscene word out. This is intentional according to Officer Candy Apple, who tried to avoid Maria from becoming a typical Mary Sue heroine.
  • Genius Bruiser: She's the one of the most physical and the most tactically minded of the Rogues, as well as The Ace when it comes to schoolwork.
  • The Ghost: In the second half of Death Arc and War Arc, Carl Robinson mentioned the name of Maria Arzonia to his new friends, the members from the Team Witness in several times. Upon telling another Spirit Guide, Sister Mary Eunice about La Nueva Familia de Arzonia, Carl expressed some sort of regret that Maria wasn't there, as Team Witness had much fewer members than Maria's new family, their future counterpart, while Moloch has countless minions serving to his cause given to the fact that he saw Moloch's followers through the Malice of Moloch inside his body.
  • Giant Puffy Sleeves: On her attire after her return back as a Spirit Guide.
  • Go and Sin No More: Her most common way of forgiveness. Maria's forgiving has limits as she doesn't forgive people without a reason, and the only thing she wants those forgiven villains do was to atone their sins, giving them a second chance to amend. She demonstrates this on Carl RobinsonSelina StrawberryGregory Grape and  Crow Faux.
    • However, sometimes she has hard feelings even for making people to atone their crimes, like how she rejected to completely forgive the likes of Oriax Wheelahr and Eve Fullbuster even acknowledging their backstory and motives, though she still gave them a second chance.
      • - Maria: (referring Oriax Wheelahr) I'm sorry. I cannot work with people like her, at least not alone. I sympathize her, but there's rather something in her I could never ignored. You can her a second chance, Katarina, but... Please leave her out of my sight, Katarina.
      • Katarina: You say you cannot show mercy on Oriax, but you accepted and forgave Carl Robinson in spite of everything he did, right? Isn't it seemed to be a double standard?
      • Maria: That's different. Carl is a much more personal case to me... since the truly unforgivable one was myself. I'm the one who drove Carl into villainy.
      • (Everyone fell silent)
      • - Maria: My hands are stained with the lives of Carl's parents, Katarina, unwilling but undeniable. It was my fault Carl turned into a villain, so I had no choice but pulling him from that hellish pit Melancholia pushed him into. If I couldn't save him, I would rather die in his hand, knowing I had it coming... and when he was back, I knew my greatest crime had been absolved. It was actually HIM forgiving and accepting ME. As for Oriax, I don't think I've ever owe her any remorse.
      • (Maria and Oriax stared at each other)
      • Maria: I do sympathize her, but I cannot absolve her myself. If she seeks atonement, she can only depend on herself, like I and Carl have been.
      • (walked away)
      • - Imperia: (referring Maria) Is she having anxiety?
    • Due to being forgiven by Carl after revealing she wasn't meant to kill his parents and was trying to atone, Maria eventually forgave Carl even he tried to kill her... but she added one more condition; Carl must never turn his back on her or the New Arzonia's Family, ever again, since this was his true home. If he wanted forgiveness, he should atone as well.
      • She also invoked this on herself, saying she also tried to atone infinitely for everything she did, so that she won't be a monster anymore. She couldn't let the time rewind, but she could stop more tragedy from ever happening again.
  • Gold and White are Divine: Her color motif as a holy spiritual figure.
  • Gonky Femme: Played for Laugh. While Michael Langdon and his Catholic Church managed to create a perfect Wanted Poster of Maria, showing her amazing facial beauty, the New World Order, however, nailed it at their best!
    • - Imperia: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
    • - Maria: Remember, Katarina...
    • (Maria's eyes becomes lifeless)
    • - Katarina: Yes?
    • - Maria: I shall be the one who will kill Diabla...
  • Good Is Not Dumb: Quite a lot of characters have assumed Maria is naive, and sometimes she is, for her faith and idealism. Mistaking this for stupidity is often a terrible mistake, as Maria has a good knowledge of how to work other people with Batman Gambits and has come up with multiple, brilliant plans for defeating the villains that generally work very well.
  • Good is Not Soft: Maria is kind, warmhearted and benevolent towards her family and friends, but after she burns down her abusive brothers, Maria turns less shy and also much feistier. She has no tolerance to crime and corruption, and so she forms the New Arzonia Family to fight fire with fire.
    • (about Pedro Pineapple) "It's God's task to absolve you, and I'm here to send you to Him!"
  • Good Girls Gone Bad: The constant abused of Arzonia Brothers to her after many years caused her to finally unleash all her wrath within her and she lost all morality she had inside of her. This, however, takes another level when Eckidina turns into a Cyborg and destroyed all humanity within her.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Her sacrifice in The Corbin Files counts, as she smiled before she died with honor.
  • Green Eyes: After her return as a Spirit, her eyes turned green instead of blue due to mixed with golden aura and made it looked like Green.
  • Guile Hero: Starting from Firenza Junior, Maria would use strategies to fight against enemies in order to turn the tables, even using manipulations. The stories involving her will have more fights with wits instead of fists as a result.
  • Guilt-Ridden Accomplice: Maria was forced to join the forces of Mafusa Gang and worked as the collaborator of her brothers, who were cruel to her. Maria became their accomplice in killing people, most notably Carl Robinson's foster parents and Holy Knight Parsifal. She felt she was guilty for all of them, and she decided to atone her own sins after returning as a Spirit Guide.

H Tropes[]

  • Ha Ha Ha - No: She gave a giggle to Akrak Couteau, right after the latter proclaimed with a speech that God never existed, of which is a total blasphemous speech. She then stopped giggling and instantly disproved Akrak, denying Akrak's own point of view upon Maria's belief since Maria already met God in paradise. Her devotion drove Akrak into rage.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a blonde and has gold color as her Color Motif. She also has a kind heart and treats every friends kindly.
  • Hate at First Sight: Maria began to have an impulse of retching when she saw Pedro Pineapple flirting with her, and she immediately let him be quiet.
  • Hates Being Alone: Her greatest fear is that she was left alone in the world with no family or friends on her side, since she herself is actually an Orphan.
  • Hates Being Touched: Zig-Zagged. She's quite sensitive and would avoid stranger's touching unless absolutely necessary. Still, she don't mind a hug or a shake of hand as a seal of friendship. She only reserves this for perverts and people flattering her, who touched her in an offensive way. In a scene in the intense climax of Pineapple ArcPedro Pineapple played Idiot Ball and intended to flirt Maria not only because of her beauty, but also in order to distract her from getting to the circus tent (where he hid the children), saying if he married an angel would make him an angel as well, combined with several times poking Maria's cheek, shoulder and even tried to hug her tightly. Of course, Maria was disgusted. The ending does not end well for Pedro, and we will all cheer for Maria when she knocked down Pedro and yelled with her Death Glare...
    • "Get your filthy paw off me, mister. You're staining me!!!"
  • Healing Hands: Like Sister Mary Eunice, Maria can heal others via touching.
  • The Heart: While Corazon makes this trope being a pun when translated into her Spanish codename, Maria fits this tropes as she is the most vital figure of the Catholic Rebels who united the rogue rebels together in her holy revolution against Michael Langdon's tyranny and make the Catholic Church return back to normal. She cares for her friends and sworn family and would protect them selflessly. There'll be no Catholic Rebels if Maria is not around.
  • He is Not My Boyfriend!: In Will of Qliphoth, Maria angrily denied to be Matt's wife when the latter claimed so to MPS droids, since she viewed their relationship as familial instead of sexual.
  • Height Angst: Averted. Despite being one of the tallest female characters of the story, and sometimes being mocked by her extremely skinny and slender figure (which are her only physical weakness rather than her height), Maria is always self-confident about her stature and was indifferent from mockery over her appearance. She even maintained enough serenity and comfort when she discovered that Oryx was a bit taller than her. Nevertheless, it makes complete sense when saying her being freaked out by Selina Strawberry's imposing figure was much of an understatement.
  • Heroic Bastard: Tragically enough, Maria is an illegitimate child of the former Arzonia Patron (already married) and a poor Spanish woman who he was having affair with, but he abandoned his mistress after she was pregnant as Maria was conceived inside her. If Maria’s mother never met Vento who took care of the mother and child, Maria would never be born and would die in a miscarriage. Being condemned as an unneeded child for many years, Maria eventually came through this.
  • Heroic Fire Rescue: Whenever she plays Big Damn Heroes moment.
  • The High Queen: Becoming Esther Blanchett's successor on Spanish throne after the former's sacrifice. Despite she only wants the throne for a short time (as she's not really good at ruling a country), she still accepts in order to help her people. Her short-termed reign is particularly a benevolent one.
  • Holy Halo: Since she's an angelic Spirit Guide, Maria can creates an enormous Holy Halo on the back of her shoulder which reached above her head, and this halos also fused with Chain Viper and could unleash the heated light chains to serve as far attack.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Her endgame Holy spell, which attacks enemies with sacred energy. Her endgame Holy spell, which attacks enemies with sacred energy.
  • Honorary Princess: She's not really born from royalty. Esther Blanchett, the royalty by blood, handed the Kingdom of Spain's future in the hands of Maria before the former's demise.
  • Hope Bringer: Maria tries to become this to bring everyone hope with her own actions, even if the situation is on the hot water and everyone lost their hope, even to the point of fight in her last breath.
  • Hot Scientist: Not exactly a scientist but is active as a co-worker to Rindou in the laboratories of Fraxinus, where she is seen helping her most of time merely because she is curious to study medicine and find a new way to of science to oppose the Manufacturing Progressive Sciences. Particularly in LOTM: Sword of Kings she serves Rindou as some secretary... And her outfit really stands up...
  • Hot Wings: She can also create wings with fire and fly into the air.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Maria is already above average height when she was a teenager, and she grew even taller after she returned as a Guide Spirit, and is still growing as a Spirit because of... She hits puberty at her age? Here's her own self-satirizing:
    • Maria: I'm not hitting puberty, Matt. My puberty is hitting me hard, instead. In addition, please don't look at me like that. It's not your fault that I'm growing like a weed, so why are you so scared?
    • Matt: That's not the point! You... you're just thirteen?! Wait, wait a minute, hold on! I need to leave for a while to calm myself! Watch out for anyone who might call the cops!
  • Humans Are Flawed: Unlike Carl who believes Humans Are Bastards (while under Cain's influence) because he was betrayed and suffered in despair which turned him into a Jackass, Maria (who calls herself a human) knows humans are actually flawed, but judging the fact that she was loved by many with kind-hearted due to her own kindness, Maria believes they're still good within humanity.
    • Humans Are Special: By the end of Eckidina Arc, Maria's major viewpoint towards the entire humanity, as the time passed by, eventually becomes a sense of appreciation because she discovers

I Tropes[]

  • I Can't Do This by Myself: During the Battle of London, Maria calmed down and spoke this to her friends to work together in saving Abel, Carl and Baccarat, as well as ending Melacholia's plans all-together so that they could end the war. Helene Hawthorn is the priority, since Maria accidentally humiliated her with a slip of tongue.
  • I Do Not Drink Wine: She has her own policy on alcohol restriction, especially during training, much to Carl's approval as well as Matt's chagrin.
  • The Idealist: Downplayed. Human!Maria was cynical, shy and bitter towards many people that she was not closed, and her return as the Guide Spirit seemed to make her into a more cheerful and idealistic person. However, the prequel episode had revealed that she herself tried to hide her sad story behind idealism as she believed people can find peace if she fight for them. During the London Battle, Maria was slowly driven back into cynicism but was cheered up by Matt and Helene, who refused to make her renounce her hope in absolving her sins, saving Carl from his corruption and ending the madness started by the Langdon Orphans. Her later personality was a combination of her human self and her Guide Spirit self, a combination of realism and idealism who believed Human are Flawed and yet there were still hope and kindness within the world, even if it might be a little glimpse of that.
  • Incorruptibly Pure Pureness: Denied. Maria's own friends believed Maria is pure of heart and shall never succumb to enemies and darkness. Maria, however, refused to see herself as such, as she only sees herself as a sinner and all her kind acts are for saving lives and making atonement for her sins.
  • The Ingenue: Often as a Badass Adorable, Maria is kind, sweet-natured, polite and optimistic, and on the Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism, she falls very much on the idealistic side.
  • In Love with Love: Overlaps with All-Loving Heroine and Wide-Eyed Idealist, as she loves all of the lovable things in nature and human personality. She's representing the Suit of Hearts, after all.
  • Insistent Terminology: She refused to be called by her nicknames and only wants them to call her either "Maria" or "Arzonia". She also got embarrassed whenever she heard Matt nicknamed her in her introduction, no matter how awesome it sounds like.
  • In-Series Nickname: Katya nicknamed her Little Angel, and there are obvious reasons.
  • In the Blood: The old Arzonia Family's evil traits as well as the family-inheriting psychopathy made by the Sabbat Clan is also inside Maria. Maria didn't know at the time of Firenza Junior about the true origins behind her family psychopathy, but she knew that something negative from her father and her brothers was inside her blood, and she tended to control her dark feelings.
  • Iron Lady: Maria is not a born-to-be monarch herself, but she has a regal and impetuous air of a queen, especially after her return as a warrior spirit. She later became the de facto queen of Spain, but never sees herself as a queen.
  • It's All My Fault: Seeking atonement is the reason which made Maria so determined to bring Carl back to her side. Maria blamed herself for Carl's tragedy and his start of darkness, so she decided to save him and mend him from his misery, avoiding him from becoming a monster like Michael. In her tearful confession, Maria even claimed that she never felt any pain when Carl beat her, since she believed Carl should be even more painful than her while she was the one who deserve every single punch from Carl's fists.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Maria would do anything good to make her friends happy, as long as it doesn't cross the line of her own moral code.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Maria (as human) once was a pretty girl when she lived happily with her Godmother, Vento of the Front, until her half-brothers came into picture. She suffered greater disfigurement after she was seriously burnt by Michael Langdon, also giving her shorter hair. According to Maria, she wore tight clothes and gloves that covered her entire body, simply because she tried to hide all of those scars and bruises all over her body. She later turned more attractive and revealed to be Beautiful All Along after she returned as a Spirit Guide, without her facial disfigurement, but her scars was still on her body.
    • Senora Armando, Maria's former next door neighbor - one of the few people around Arzonia Brothers' community who treats Maria kindly - remarks what a pretty child Maria was and her reaction to seeing Maria's teenage look was "what did those monsters [Arzonia Brothers] do to her?".

J Tropes[]

  • Jack-of-All-Stats: She utilizes all kinds of skills, including healing, support, and both physical and magic attacks.
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: Downplayed. Maria didn't turn completely cynical like Carl, but still she started to view things more realistically once Firenza Junior was over, saying she would cut Eckidina to death without hesitation at all. Her Astaroth Future counterpart, however, played this straight.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Pre-Spirit self. While she was in Mafusa Gang, due to under constant abuse and got coerced into killing innocent people, Maria got easily angry with people who offended her, like Mikan Tsumiki who argued with her that her brothers were nothing but a bunch of slavers, just in time Maria started to get warm up to them due to becoming someone more valuable for their cause. However, she still maintained sorrow and remorse over every single lives she had ruined, as well as unable to gain any genuine care or even a shed of acknowledgement from her original family. She also renounced Guinevere once she saw the latter torturing innocent people due to Disproportionate Retribution.
  • Judge, Jury and Executioner: After causing the death of her brother, she went on a path to vigilante works and went extreme to eliminate criminals. Her post-revival self still maintains such, but is more sophisticated and added with Flowery Insult. She prefers to only kill those unforgivable monsters and would kill them with a quick burn.
  • Justice Will Prevail: A strong believer in this, much to the chagrin of the more cynical Carl.

K Tropes[]

  • Kick the Son of Bitch: Being tolerating doesn't mean she's stupid. Quite a few irredeemable villains had faced Maria wrath and even death, starting with Arzonia Brothers who are scums, and then a handful, including Hate Sinks like Pedro Pineapple, whom she beat very hard.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery / Pimped Out Dress: Maria wears in a sophisticated long dress, but still she is a fighting warrior in battles in the Star of Bethlehem and Morte. Subverted when she's in her CR-Unit, since it is made for battle.
  • Kill it with Fire: Duh.
  • Kill Me if it Satisfies You: Believing she herself was her own downfall, Maria eventually goaded Carl into killing her when she confessed the dreadful night when Carl's foster parents and friends perished, as long as he could spare others. Ironically though, Carl then realized Maria was coerced and changed his mind, especially after he discovered his parents gave their own lives up in exchange for their foster son, while Maria actually performed a Mercy Kill.
  • Killing in Self-Defense: Most of the reasons of her killing was out of self-defense as well as rescuing missions, unless her victims are insufferable (Arzonia Brothers & Nio Hashiri, and almost Akrak Couteau)
  • Knight Templar: Downplayed. Sometimes, she's not using beyond violence and including killing criminals, believing she's representing justice. Even so, she tends to control such a feelings. Her Astaroth Future counterpart played this much straighter.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Outside of her potent magic-based abilities, she's a fierce fist-fighter, especially shown in Firenza Junior and Anti-Christ Saga.

L Tropes[]

  • Lady of Adventure: Becoming this after Diabla the Qliphoth Tyrant's defeat, going on a journey back to Sleepy Hollow to stop Moloch's rise alongside Matt, Abel, Carl, Seth, Adam, Poison Ivy and Eva.
  • Lady of War: Like Katarina, Maria is hot-tempered and is willing to fight and kill her enemies so that they will never lay a finger on the world ever again. She never approve gore and avoid mass killing, though.
  • Legacy Character: Amongst those Catholics who were freed from Michael Langdon and/or were disgusted by his atrocities, Maria becomes their messiah, and many of these people forms all sort of rebels to restore the Catholic Church from Michael. After Maria returned back to life, she unified those rebels into one unified faction of Catholic Rebels.
  • Large and in Charge: A rare heroine example. Towering herself above females like Katarina, Abbie, Katrina Crane, Jenny, Imperia and Oriax (though she is shorter than Selina and Christine), Maria is one of the tallest female allies of the Rogues and Team Witness on both hands. She is also the leader of the New Arzonia Family, always showing her skills in fight and is always fighting for freedom, justice and kindness.
    • Played straight in LOTM: Destiny, where she endures another growth spurt due to her power rises and becomes nearly seven feet tall, but she still stood shorter than Selina.
  • Lava is Boiling Kool-Aid: Maria's lava, under her awakening state, actually runs as fast as flooding water.
  • The Leader: Of the unified Catholic Rebels and its product out of bond, La Nueva Familia de Arzonia.
  • Lethal Lava Land: Her shortly awakened Elemental Power had turned the Star of Bethlehem into a molten state even without touching it one bit, and the uncontrollable lava soon turned the beautiful structure into a melting mess that ended up exploded. Maria felt that having such a floating castle of grandeur melted was a shame, but she can find no one else to blame.
  • Letimotif: Frozen performed by Within Temptation.
  • Let Them Die Happy: At the end of Firenza Junior spinoff, before Plaisir tried to sacrifice herself to stop her evil and malicious Melancholia persona, she asked Maria whether she would defeat Michael and make him become better. Even knowing Michael is irredeemable, Maria said yes before destroying Melancholia's Supreme Croatoan Form. However, turned out that Plaisir never died. Her own subconsciousness (alongside her dark persona) merely returned back to Purgatory and became Melancholia once more. The harsh thing is, she'll know how heartless Michael is, and such effort Maria made lied in vain.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: Her return as a Guide Spirit was played with this. Before her death, her hair was tied up to prevent it from reaching her back but as reborn Spirit, she let her Rapunzel Hair reach her back.
  • Like Father, Unlike Child: Invoked. After the truth behind Carl's family loss, Carl started to self-loathe himself after realizing his vengeance had been all for nothing (since Maria didn't willing to commit that killing), saying he was just the child of a monster (his father) and thus had no place to stay in this world. However, Maria was angry with him and immediately persuade him to forget it, with this:
    • Maria: Why does it even matter!? MY OWN FATHER IS ALSO A MONSTER!
    • (Carl gasped in shock)
    • Maria: Don't you understand, Carl? In fact, you're my own reflection in a mirror! If I can become this happy and accepted, become something positive that I never imagined that I could be, why can't you!?
  • Light is Good: Fire and light are Maria's power motif after all.
  • Little Miss Badass: No one would say this trope isn't for a 13-year old Child Prodigy in military skills and her knowledge of poison and others.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • Aside from the Blackness, it's revealed that the other weakness of Maria are all natural for a fire-elemental Spirit Guide, including water (like sea water, hot springs and heavy rain), ice, snow and extremely low temperature, shown when she felt weak/relaxed when a heavy downpour coming down, or when she allowed the cold wave to sweep her bare feet during her strode at a beach in order to cool herself down.
    • Too much of coldness will cause her power to decrease rapidly, of which Melancholia exploited during the final battle in Firenza Junior spinoff by turning into an icy creature with the Supreme Croatoan Virus she made for herself.
  • Lovely Angels: With Magilou, later Seth.
  • Lovable Rogues: She may kills, burns and destroys many places, but as a purely Chaotic Good vigilant like other members from The Rogues, she does these to fight against crimes and corruption. She never lays a finger on innocent people and never approves gore.

M Tropes[]

  • Mama Bear: To Katarina Couteau and Jellal Fernandes, the way Maria tried to scold Yuri Barnes in his words that showed scorn to Magi-Tech users (happened right after the Battle of Morte was over) tends to be like a mother disciplines her child.
  • The Matchmaker: Although she is as solid as iron on the term of romance, Maria actually becomes the matchmaker for several friends. In one interpretation in her conversation with Kyouko by the end of Firenza Junior, was that Maria actually discovered Kyouko's feeling of love towards Sonia and the determination to redeem her (although she may or may not also see it as a family love). While not being approval of the terms of homosexuality, Maria actually allowed Kyouko to confess her love towards Sonia to take her back. Still, Maria did this for Kyouko, not Sonia, and she know breaking it means no good to Kyouko at all.
  • The McCoy: Maria is both passionate and compassionate towards her friends, being absolutely kind and cheerful when she's happy, though it's actually an attempt to hide her sadness beneath.
  • Meaningful Name: Maria's name is definitely representing Virgin Mary.
    • Arzonia not only plays on "Arson", "Zone" and "Pyromania" but also plays on the name Arizona, which is originated from Spanish word Arizonac, derived from the O'odham name alĭ ṣonak, meaning "small spring." Sounds ironic to a fire spirit, right?
  • Mercy Kill: Coerced. During the arson, after Carl's parents begged her to kill them, Maria eventually pulled the trigger to kill Carl's parents, and she still regretted her act for killing an innocent pair.
  • Messianic Archetype: Opposite to Michael's Satanic Archetype. After Michael Langdon's ascension as the Pope, Maria was hailed as the messianic figure by several groups of Catholic Rebels when they began to form, due to her sacrifice and devotion. Maria later returned and united those once loosed groups into one unique La Resistance under her command, in order to bring hope and peace to the world by fighting against Fallen Roman Catholic Church's corrupt rule and restore the Church back to normal.
  • Modest Royalty: She never intend to make any citizens to call her "Your Majesty" or "Milady" or some other titles in casual situations, still preferring to be called simply as "Maria" or "Arzonia".
  • Morality Pet: Maria, by obvious terms, is just like Katarina. She has her dark side she inherited from her vicious family and have a big potential to become just like them; psychotic arsonists. However, her moral codes and precious friends and people she met during her journey to defeat Michael Langdon and take down his control over the Catholic Church gave her many things for her to protect and try her best to keep them safe. While the World War III was indeed a terrible incident, this war caused Maria to become more loving towards the victims of this conflict.
    • She also became a Morality Pet towards Carl and earned his trust.
  • Mundane Luxury: Denied. After accepting Esther's throne and having all of the corrupt city council arrested (while having their properties confiscated), Maria was... actually more than happy when she had ascended to a higher social status and became a royalty, along with her family, knowing she walked a hard way earning these. In spite of this, Maria never abuses her new social luxury or status. Instead, she uses these luxuries in exchange for helping many people, in order to share her happiness to those poor people that are longed for them, while she herself still acts humble like she used to be.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Throughout the story, Maria is the first (former) Mafusa Gang member who showed utter regret over every crime she had committed when she was younger, and that's why she tried to fight in order to seek her own atonement. The reason she tried to prevent herself from killing people, especially in a torturous way, was because she had so many blood on her hand.
    • After she regained her sanity from Eckidina’s evil brainwashing, Maria had a Heroic BSOD and broke down in tears for killing innocent people and became nothing but a killing machine of Eckidina, and that’s why she desperately wanted to kill herself.
    • After knowing that she was responsible for the death of Carl's parents, as well as Carl's hatred inflamed in him, Maria decided to save Carl from Melancholia's grasp - at least bringing his morality and sense back - since if she didn't do so, she herself won't find peace as she herself was responsible for Carl's misery and tried to atone. This eventually worked after Carl realized that Maria was never willing to commit such crime and was shocked that she tried to atone a sin she never tried to commit.
      • "I did so many terrible things to so many people... I spent a lot of nights wishing I could take them back. I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just want you to understand. Now, all I have... is everyone who is kind to me..."

N Tropes[]

  • Neat Freak: She'll freaked out even for a single speck, and thus during the time in Spanish Royal Palace, she works as her own maid.
  • Never Hurt an Innocent: One of Maria's main moral codes. She not only prevent herself from hurting innocent people, but also tries to prevent others to do so, especially when the so-called sacrifice is meaningless. Carl's berserk broke her heart because Carl crossed this line, but she then discovered that Carl's code of not hurting innocent people still existed when he was stripped from his berserk form.
  • Nice Hat: Maria’s angel form has a small red had in Turkish style, decorated with white feathers.
  • No Badge? No Problem!: When she worked with Sleepy Hollow Sheriff's Department to investigate the Hellfire Club and the Order of the Blood Moon.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Tall, blond, well-mannered, being a devout Catholic, along with a firm refusal and disgust over sexual appeal? Does that ring a bell to you about the late Grace Kelly and most of her portrayal of classy characters?
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: She's based on several historical figures who are connected to benevolence and/or freedom in the mind of Officer Candy Apple, including but not limited to El Che Guevara, Liu HulanZhou Enlai, Pope John Paul II, Jiang Zhuyun, etc. Her trace of anarchism inside her own characteristics is based on that of Guy Fawkes.
  • Not So Above It All: While usually serious and no-nonsense person, Maria is actually a Comically Serious person especially after her appearance in Sword of Kings. In Tales of a Lost Hero - Part 2, she was dismayed by the Rogues' overall weird atmosphere and was even more shocked that Matt Butcher fell into such idiocy as well, even resulting in a breakdown within her cool personality, showing her Wild Take for the very first time. In spite of this, Maria admires the Rogues as being a family and felt happy for Katarina.
  • Not So Stoic: After returning in her Spirit Guide form, Maria tends to be more calm and composed that her former self. However, after losing Carl, her demeanor started to crack and began to revert back to her formerly ruthless and violent self. When Seth Nightroad revealed that Maria shot down the adoptive parents of Carl, Maria was horrified and ashamed when she believed it was her fault to make Carl descent into darkness by stripping his family away.

O Tropes[]

  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Played for Drama when she saw Fiamma of the Right blew up her gun power supplies and freaked out.
    • Played for Laugh after Imperia steals Maria's comics, who then gets angry and chases after her with a brick in hand once her Berserk Buttons were pressed again. When Maria spots Imperia, she throws the brick but bricks hits the lamp bulb on the entrance door of the venidad, shattering it. But the brick hits something else too...
      • - Imperia: See what you did!?
      • - Maria: ¡Es solo una bombilla! (t's just a lamp bulb!)
      • - Imperia: I'm not talking about the lamp bulb!
      • - Maria: ¿Y que? (Then what?)
      • - Imperia: Take a look!
      • (Sephiria Arks KnightWalker lies knocked out in the floor with the brick completely shattered over her body)
      • - Maria: Oh my!
  • Official Couple: With Matt Butcher but if this is more like a sibling relationship and by an instance, the most strange relationship between the characters of LOTM: Sword of Kings considering they have different types of love; family love, sibling love, sex love that is more related to only lust and finally affection-love that is true love between two different people. How really Matt sees this relationship, however, is totally unknown.
    • The latter eventually confirmed in Firenza Junior that Matt, originally unaware of Maria's true age, thought she was a young adult, but he reacted in horror and regret at himself after finding out she was only a teenager. Later, Matt resolved in becoming a brotherly figure to Maria and keep a Platonic relationship between them until Maria is old enough to get married. Still, he often boasted that Maria is his girlfriend or even wife to show their bond or make a joke, much to her chagrin.
  • The Ojou: Averted at first, as she's well-educated, polite and graceful, albeit born in a rich family... unless you recalled that she was conceived through a love affair. Played straight after the New Arzonia Family started to find their place in Spain, Maria finally ascended to higher social status, and yet she uses this as an advantage to help more people in need.
  • Only Sane Woman: Of Mafusa Gang of what we known, Maria is the only person who showed regret and sorrow for the killing of innocent people she committed once.
  • O.O.C. is Serious Business: Whenever she almost speaks profane (though she tried to shorten the curse), it means she's gonna blow her top, especially when showing vast disgust over her enemies.
  • The Ophelia: Starting to go unstable after Carl Robinson's betrayal, being stabbed by an illusion of her mother, as well as realizing that the pair she was forced to kill was Carl's parents, and she would do anything to bring the original Carl back, as Maria believed that herself was the source of his pain. She almost went mad as she tried to repent her sins. She gets better after Carl's return and forgiveness.
  • Orphanage of Love: After the New Arzonia Family finds its place in Spain, Maria reuses some her old family's lavish but empty estates and made them into many public uses. Among them, there are new war orphanage for the poor kids like herself.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Ever since she became a prisoner and servant to Arzonia Brothers, with her father abandoned her and her mother gone forever, as well as being separated from her Godmother... That ordeal is the primal priority to make Maria's spirit stronger, as she later said she went from Heaven to Hell in a young age and struggled with all sorts of hardships, while she was recalling everything and telling them to Carl.

P Tropes[]

  • Parental Abandonment: See Disappeared Dad.
  • Parental Substitute: Being like a mother as well as sister to all of her teammates. She later adopts Melodia, the daughter of Calvin Cranberry and Kelly Kumquat, raising her as her own child.
  • Pay Evil Unto Evil: Invoked by herself to be her methods, but downplayed as she has limits. She is not beyond using violence on her enemies, but she hardly ever slow, gory or painful deaths.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Well, let's face it. Michael's Church Militant received a severe blow because of her rebellion, and later the KnightWalker Alliance was altered by her Chaotic Good tendency.
  • Personality Powers: Maria's temper is fiery as much as her magic ability. The angrier she gets, the hotter the fire she creates.
  • Petite Pride: Downplayed. She is at very least indifferent over her flat chest size, and sometimes she even stated she was already satisfied with her own figure whenever she was riduculed by Imperia Deamonne.
  • Pie in the Face: During an argument between Yuri and Matt, Yuri accidentally slammed a cherry pie on Maria's face. Maria was annoyed at first, but soon found that the pie was delicious and forgave both of them instead. Although, Carl mercilessly punished both Yuri and Matt in Maria's stead. Overlaps Delicious Fruit Pies.
  • Pillars of Moral Character: She herself had nothing to do with the actions of Arzonia Brothers, Eckidina KnightWalker and Mafusa Gang since she was just coerced and/or brainwashed, but she is determined to stop it anyway out of obligation for what she had done even if that's not out of her own will. This also extends to the people and families (like Carl) that were hurt by it. Because she owed Carl that debt, Maria was loyal to him no matter what.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Matt, even after their Sexless Marriage.
  • Playing Card Theme: Her codname, "Corazon", is Spanish for "Heart", fitting Arzonia Family's overall Playing Card Theme. She represents the Queen of Hearts, with her being Matt Butcher's First Love, her Alice Allusion and her In Love with Love personality fits the card.
  • Playing With Fire: As the Angel of Flame, this is obvious for her.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: She has a body of a young adult woman after returning back as a Spirit Guide.
  • Plucky Girl: To Vanifer: "Sure that I won't escape. I won't even flinch. I think I'm REALLY plucky, right?"
  • The Pollyanna: Very often, Carl criticized her for being such person for her overall optimistic and idealistic personality as he was more cynical.
  • Power of Friendship: She believes that she'll bring Carl back with this as long as she made him to know the truth behind his foster parents' demise. At first, she believes she should finish her atonement first.
  • Pragmatic Hero: In Tales of a Lost Hero - Part 2, Maria said she had no approving attitude towards Katarina's gory brutality inflicted on her enemies, but still, she put her moral code aside since she wanted Akrak Couteau to pay for those destruction and deaths she caused.
  • Precision F-Strike: Almost letting it out and breaking her polite character in Firenza Junior in her Heroic Breakdown saying these:
    • "Screw him! Screw them all! The hero of the Church?! Crushing terrorists and anarchists?! He is the one who support true anarchist, that son of a...!"
    • She later outright uses "bastard", "damn" and "screw" to enemies when provoked intensely, meaning she still had some personalities displayed in The Corbin Files.
  • Principles Zealot: Downplayed, but her Cyborg persona played it straight. After returning as a Spirit Guide, Maria often regards herself as an embodiment of God's Justice (which shared some similarities with Kanon Rihavein, but still not that severe). Sometimes, Maria would be even get prone to a Knight Templar in some ways, which serves as a foreshadowing of her dark side she tried to control.
  • Proper Lady: Her prim and proper attitude as well as well-educations made her much more refined comparing to Imperia, Carl and Katarina.

Q Tropes[]

  • Quality Over Quantity: Her view over technique is prone to strategy, attacking her enemies is to ambush their core element instead of wasting time on meaningless killing.
  • Quantity vs. Quality: Quality to Katarina's Quantity.
  • Quit Your Whining: In spite of a compassionate person, Maria utterly hates people whining about their complaints constantly, especially when their trouble turned out to be a petty trauma. Maria would spoke back by simply saying she knew the true hell better than they did, making them to shut up. If they don't, she'll punish them.

R Tropes[]

  • Rapunzel Hair: She has waist-long blond hair. She nicknamed them as her “little waterfall”.
  • The "Reason You Suck" Speech: She really likes to deliver this vibe to enemies. In a MAD section, Maria gave a massive breaking speech of humiliation to mortify Kanon Rihavein in a reference of the classic scene in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where Zhuge Liang scolded Wang Lang to his death. Here's its climax. Enjoy.
    • "People like you shall hide themselves into their own shells and creep like sewer rats! How dare you come here in front of me, calling yourself as some sort of God's will and cursing humans all along? You white-haired wench! You sour brat! When one day you die, how can you face those late kings and queens of Aldegyr Kingdom in your afterlife?! You pathetic child! You insolent wretch! You wasted your entire life days after wretched day, killing yourself bit by bit, but you never did anything that was kind to your people! You are like a dog who broke its spine, but you are still able to bark in front of me and my allies! However, you can never be able to bite! I HAVE NEVER SEEN SOMEONE SO SHAMELESS LIKE YOU!!!"
  • Rebel Leader: She is the leader of Catholic Rebels that centers around her New Arzonia Family and tries to take back the Catholic Church from the evil hands of Michael Langdon. Later, however, this rebel had developed into a family and their motto became closer towards contributing to fight against the KnightWalker Alliance and end WWIII.
  • Rebellious Princess: Becoming this after she ascended onto the Spanish throne, and subverted once she retired after the war.
  • Red Baron: “Angel of Flame” & "La Reina de Corazones".
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Depends on situations and individuals.
    • Maria is Blue to Matt, Katarina, Marlos, Arzonia Brothers, Carl (pre-Bethlehem), Jenny, Vanifer, Seth and Imperia's Red
    • However, she is also Red to even more characters' Blue, like Abbie, Guinevere, Michael, Melancholia, Carl (post-Bethlehem), Ichabod, Sister Mary Eunice, Yuri Barnes and Abel
  • Restrained Revenge: Maria saw her father crying in a London street as a broken drunkard. Despite still hating her father, Maria intends to leave him alone since God has already punished her father, and Carl is the priority. She doesn't need to get her hand dirty to kill another flesh and blood of hers, where a more important enemy is at large. Her sister, Guinevere, isn't that merciful like Maria at all, though.
  • Resurrection Sickness: In the prequel episode, it was revealed that Maria, after her resurrection, had a long time of flashback and struggle while receiving change in her physical appearance, like suffering from literal growing pains from her intense growth spurt. Her mental state was also unstable and bitter when she was picked up by Duchess Asran.
  • Revenge: Sort of subverted. She angrily blamed Michael Langdon for her suffering and wanted him dead for good, but she was not purely out of personal vengeance. Instead, Maria put her own personal feelings aside and seek vengeance for other victims of both Michael and Eckidina, and she focused on many more threats in the world that combined into the KnightWalker Alliance, in spite of still, Michael is her utmost priority of targets.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Bureaucratized: After becoming the temporary Queen of Spain because of Esther Blanchett's last will and testament, Maria was worried over her capability over ruling a nation and intended to use Carl's advice to administrate Spain, while fighting against Michael and the KnightWalker Family. However, once the STAR LABS of United States of America invaded Europe, Maria's own weakness in politics proved her greatest fear that came true. Being an idealist and religious person really doesn't mean she can be a suitable ruler, and that's why Maria already intended to resign once the World War III was over and the KnightWalkers were defeated.
  • Running Gag: Well, some people said her was Italian either by mistake or on purpose...

S Tropes[]

  • Say My Name: MATT!
  • Sensei-chan: She is 13-years old but she acts like a mentor to Katarina, who may be older but she is more stupid than anyone. Her knowledge and vast understanding of chemistry and psychology turns her into the most young and intelligent ally of Ratatoskr. And considering Katarina grew up in Japan... "Hey, sensei!"
  • The Scapegoat: What occurred on her is definitely nothing to celebrate. Considered to be one of the most notable tragic heroine in the story, all of the things happens on Maria's childhood is definitely depressive. After the death of one of her brothers, Maria was forced to become her two remaining brothers' minions to do their own dirty work, while she tried to do hard so that she could prove her worth. Nevertheless, those uncaring fiends still mistreated her... and that's only the start
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: She hardly gets along with many (if not all of them) Peace Foundation executives and some leaders in Global Pact Defense who blindly follows the rules and puts people in danger often.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Likes to use some complicated words, most blatantly in her attempted Last Words to complain how the Black Earth Cultists led by Marlos Urnayle are stupid (to the point most are reacting with "huh?").
  • Sexless Marriage: Her later marriage with Matt Butcher after the fall of Leohart the Prince of Hell. Instead of giving birth to a child, Maria adopted one daughter.
  • Significant Birth Date: Her birthday is November 5, the Guy Fawkes Night in the UK.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: After returning back as a Spirit and transforming her physical appearance into a more sophisicated and matured woman, Maria became as clean as a priestess and showed her more beautiful side.
  • She's Got Legs: Whilst about 85% of her body is wrapped in clothes, including her entire legs, Maria's legs can still be visible and she sometimes used them to attack and dodging. Her legs are lean, long, flexible and straight, and they contributed 65% of her height.
  • Shoot the Dog: Downplayed. Maria was forced to kill Carl's parents even if she didn't want to, and she had great unease ever since. It was one of the many crimes she regretted.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She's sophisicated as much as she's deadly if she wants to be such.
  • Siblings Yin-Yang: With the villainous Arzonia Brothers and Guinevere.
  • Simple, yet Opulent: Inverted. It's more likely Opulent, yet Simple. Maria's extravagant dress was created via magic when she returned back to life, and she never spent one penny on it.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The reason she develops a fondness to Matt is because he is a kind man in spite of his jovial and casual personality.
  • So Proud of You: Showing this for many times.
    • Every time Carl shows his kindness and compassion after his final Heel-Face Turn in Famine Arc, Maria is seen with a soft and sincere smile on her face. As they pour their hearts out to each other during their Darkest Hour against Melancholia, Maria admits that she never once saw him as an unwanted child — rather, she saw him as proof that there are people who are pushed by the cold and dark side of humanity and turned darkened, and she is immensely proud of the more heroic man he has become.
  • Spell My Name with A S: When they first met, Albert Apple was stunned by Maria's beauty and was so nervous that he mispelled her name as "Mary Arizona" accidentally. Matt immediately corrected Albert, but Maria never minded such.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Born in a rich but Big, Screwed Up Family as an illegiminate child did not make Maria evil or unreasonable. After all, the first nine years in her life were spent with Vento, who teached her belief, manners and kindness. If Maria never lived with Vento, then she'll become someone like Dark Arzonia after all.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Not only being attractive, Maria is very tall even when she was a 13-year-old child, standing 1.68m, and her height increased after she became a Cyborg, standing 1.92m, almost as tall as Acqua of the Back and in the same height of Selina Strawberry, who is the tallest female human character in the storyline (even under normal circumstances).
    • After she returns as a spirit, Maria’s height is between her previous two forms, but she still stands 1.75m and towers over many people like Magilou, Imperia and Katarina (in her base form), making her one of the tallest female allies of the Rogues. Not to mention she's still growing by this point, so it's FAR from her full height in LOTM: Destiny, which is nearly seven feet according to official files.
  • The Strategist: Her intelligence increased significantly after her return as a Holy Spirit Warrior. She also utilizes many kinds of strategy in the final battle against Melancholia, acting as the brain of her Team of Four.
  • Strolling Through the Chaos: All of which is being caused, directly or otherwise, by Maria during her rampage in Madrid that killed hundreds of criminals.
  • Sweet Tooth: Maria enjoys candies and desserts, and Vento remembered just how comical yet heartwarming when she saw Maria pludged herself into her birthday cake and praised its sweetness.
  • Suddenly SHOUTING!: "I'M NOT ITALIAN!!!!!"
  • Super Speed: Like Carl and Matt, Maria is good at speed as well via flying and leaping in midair.
  • Supreme Chef: She learned cooking skills from others by herself and helped Katarina with cooking the dinner, since Katarina did a horrible job.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: To many people, Maria is strict and serious, with little sense of humor (compared to Carl who is presented as 100% serious), but she is a rather fair person. Also, Maria shows her sweet side to her family and friends who's considered as close people to her.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Even as a member from Mafusa Gang, Maria never even tries to kill people, but she had no choice. Mostly, she was driven into murder and always regretted them as long as those were innoncent civillians, including Carl's foster parents. Some of her victims, however, were Asshole Victims, like her brothers, which are few of the victims she showed no remorse over their murder, since they deserved every bit of it.

T Tropes[]

  • Team Mom: She serves as her new family's leader and take care of many friends of hers like a mother taking care of her children.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Maria admitted she tried to mend everything she caused and atone all the sins as far as she can since she had killed so many people during her time as a Mafusa Gangster.
  • They Fight Crime!: What made Maria's reputation rises amongst her supporters is her zero-tolerance towards criminal atrocities. Maria humbles herself and her rebels as outlaws, but people who supports the New Arzonia Family considers them as vigilantes and saviors. This is why she eventually accepts some of the advice of Carl Robinson and becomes partners in crime fighting.
  • This is Unforgivable!: She still has her line, after all. She is still willing to kill those monstrous humans who are so horrible that not even she will ever forgive (most notably Arzonia Brothers, Akrak Couteau, Phyllis Peach, Felix Drake, Eckidina KnightWalker and Lady Van Tassel) because they're irredeemable and deserves punishment. She later has a limit of forgiveness on human villains, as both she and Carl cannot forgive Lord Helio, despite his tragic backstory. It was because of Helio himself, who went too far in his remorseless actions of sacrificing the humanity in order to bring back Hestia with the Stone of Wisdom. However, she sympathizes his loss over his daughter.
  • Token Heroic Orc: She's one of the few, if not only, former Mafusa Gang member who shows remorse over the gangsters' atrocities and tries to atone her sins. She also revealed to Carl and Matt that she would find Katarina Couteau and help her to overcome the trauma of losing Eugen Katsuragi, feeling that Eugen's death was one of her sins as well, for being too weak and cowardly when she was younger.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly Girl to Katarina's Tomboy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After she returns as a Spirit Guide, she becomes the literal Angel of Flame and becomes skilled in fire magic of many kinds. Some of her most badass moments occurs in the 2nd part of Firenza Junior and Tales of a Lost Hero.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Paella, cream puff and strawberry cake.
  • Trauma Conga Line:
    • First Time: In The Corbin Files, she was threatened to become her brothers' collaborator and did the work when she tried to earn respect. However, she realized that her brothers treated her as nothing but merely tools for them to exploit. She later rebelled against them and killed them, but later she was attacked by Michael and got roasted. As if it wasn't bad enough, Maria was transformed into a KnightWalker Cyborg and did Eckdina's biddings, to the point that she had to kill herself in order to escape from the misery... This is something which haunted Maria all day long.
    • Second Time: All the way in Firenza Junior, Maria's luck didn't turn better since she suffered from betrayl, loss and even injury, both physical and emotional. Saving Carl wasn't an easy job, and beating Melancholia was even harder. Even Katarina was shocked that Maria endured pain even worse than The Rogues when they met in the Morte. In the final battle against Melancholia in Firenza Junior, Maria states that she has family and people for her to protect, as well as many wrongdoings for her to fix and atone, so she cannot give in towards her despair or her inner darkness.

U Tropes[]

  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Her father is said to be an obese man who is not only ugly from outside but inside as well. She is beautiful and wise unlike her brothers and her father who was only a Greed Bastard with no interest in other things rather than money. She most likely inherited her beauty from her mother, who is no less a beauty.
  • Unexpected Character: Her appearance in Firenza Junior fits such tropes, as no promotional materials indicated her return in the Firenza Junior spinoff story, only mentioning her by name.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Seriously, don't press her Berserk Buttons or say she's an Italian if you heard her speak Spanish, please.

V Tropes[]

  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Imperia Deamonne. They both bickers against each other whenever they meet but still their friendships becomes much closer as the story progressed.
  • Villainesses Want Heroines: PROBABLY, in a non-romantic way. Ara really shows a big sense of admiration for Maria, but hates her caring nature that turns her character to be boring, so she will feel a lot of pleasure in corrupting her to turn Maria in a demon just like her; a person without capacity to love or show empathy for others. Her feelings for Maria are notable that she will praise her just by the mention of her name near her.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Although being a heroic character, Maria had been an anti-villain before, and she had several breakdowns before and after her transformation into a spirit. Her more cruel future self in the Astaroth Hell came from the loss of her friends as well as all those horrid torments she suffered, making her becoming insane and cynical in the process.
    • Cyborg Maria's villainous breakdown happened together with her sudden remembering when she saw a pair of cuffs in London Tower, rekindled her lost memories and made her to remember just what kind of savages were her evil brothers. She then yelled and cried as she turned lunatic as her memory returned back into her own head.
      • The Retcon version debuted in Firenza Junior played this even further due to the Darker and Edgier term, as Maria began to exhibit mad fury in denial of her false memory and attacked Acqua in a fit of madness, before her scars revealed and her rotten wounds were full of smelly pus and blood, before the feeling of pain and hunger returned all in once before her memory coming back. Ouch, that does sound so sad and painful to see.
    • Upon turning into a Black Demon because of being affected by Ara's Blackness, Maria became the Painlash Overlord, an insane and chaotic Black Demon that has strong power to destroy the world. Her prim and proper demeanor completely shatters and she becomes an insane, shrieking mess who spends the entire battle screaming in madness and attacking like a rabid animal.
  • Villainous Crush: Amazingly enough, despite being a good-hearted heroine, Maria has some villains who fell for her beauty or, to say at least, caring nature. It is also implied to true love feelings or merely lust.
    • Pedro Pineapple was the first villain to ever flirt with Maria because of her appearance, but early concepts of him showed he was empty and could no feel love at all, meaning no matter what he felt for her, it was merely lust to sleep with her. Needless to say, that never happened and he only received a Humilliation Conga.
    • Black Raven for being a dark version of Matt Butcher, continued having feelings for Future Maria, who just continues to be Maria Arzonia in all points. Despite becoming a Black Demon with no emotions except for bloodlust, Raven still shows love for Maria, but now in a twisted way; he consider their battle to be their special moment, something that can be compared to a kiss. In his final moments, he finally snapped out of Ara's brainwash and demonstrated he continued to be same sweet-hearted person he was before.
  • Virgin in a White Dress / Woman in White: Maria is based in the Virgin Mary and knowing she never had any sexual contact with Matt or other people, she stands up on this trope considering most of her dresses and outfit are based in the white color. Even her MPS' CR Unit is white but works more like a White Battle Suit.

W Tropes[]

  • Walking Spoiler: For those who're not familiar with her story, talking too much about her life will spoil her transformation into a KnightWalker Cyborg, her own apparent sacrifice, her return as a holy spirit and many more about her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?!: Downplayed. After her confrontation against Guinevere Arzonia, Maria was confused at Vento, who lied to her about the death of Guinevere's mother. She asked about Vento's murder on Guinevere's mother, which is the major motivation for Guinevere to kill Maria and Vento for revenge. Nevertheless, Maria soon realized that Guinevere's mother was no saint to begin with. Vento was trying to protect Maria's pregnant mother and killed Guinevere's mother, purely out of defense, thus saving Maria from dying before she was even born. Guinevere was only using the killing as an excuse to justify her heinous actions, and Vento warned Maria that in this world, some people never deserves to live no matter what their excuse is.
    • However, it played straight in Tales of a Lost Hero - Part 2, where Maria was enraged at Yuri Barnes for his concealing over the Blackness, causing the problematic corruption in Carl turned worse.
  • Weight Woe: Despite her Sweet Tooth, Maria is extremely insecure about her weight and often goes on a diet after she consumed too much cream puffs and paella, two of her favorite foods. In spite of this, Spirit Guides actually won't put up their weight via eating.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: After burning down her brothers to stop their crimes and abuse, Maria goes on a rampage in killing criminals. After the foundation of Catholic Rebels, Maria still remains as some sort of an extremist who's not beyond violence, but she never approves gore and believes being too cruel and giving people slow death will make her just like her enemies. The KnightWalker Alliance labels her as a terrorist.
  • White Sheep: The original Arzonia Family is full of psychopaths and murderers, but Maria stands out as not only one of the few Only Sane Woman within the family, but also able to cleanse her old family from its old sins and reforms it into a benevolent family, marking herself as probably the most positively remembered Arzonia ever in their family history.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: In the classic political sense, she is one of the most extreme Wide-Eyed Idealist within the storyline, in contrast to Katarina, Azul and Carl. Despite knowing humanity has flaws and dark side, Maria still believes in hope and no matter what, she'll never lose trust upon humanity, as she knows there're still many good people around the world despite their flaws. Carl and Eva were both influenced by her later, and yet Maira's own idealism is later toned down a bit and begins to see things more realistically.
  • Woman in White: After returning back as a Spirit, Maria wears white cloth often. Overlaps with her Color Motif of Gold and White are Divine.
  • The Woman Wearing the Queenly Mask: After her coronation as the Queen of Spain. Despite she doesn't let her close ones calls her a queen, preferring "Maria" or "Arzonia" instead.
  • Workaholic: During the darkest hours of Catholic Rebels, after Esther and Carl betrayed the Rebels, Maria works for several days without actually eating or having a rest, driving to a point of extreme starvation that even Maria herself was surprised. Thankfully, Magilou immediately fixed her problems by making chefs cooking paella.

X Tropes[]

  • The X of Y: The Angel of Flame.
  • X Must Not Win: "Langdon must be stopped at any cost!"
  • Xanatos Gambit: Downplayed. A skilled Batman Gambit user, Maria becomes more and more skilled at planning this kind of strategy as her story progressed. However, her Xanatos Gambit can only works without any Diabolus Ex Machina interuption, though an abrupt accident rarely happened. Her Arch-Enemy, Michael Langdon, is much skilled than this that he almost made Maria fall into the Failure is the Only Option trope.

Y Tropes[]

  • You Killed My Father: It was revealed in Firenza Junior that Maria was coerced by her brothers to have Carl's (adoptive) parents killed, and under Cain's manipulation, Carl remembered his hatred and decided to take revenge on Maria, no matter what the cause. However, the hatred ceased after Carl discovered that Maria was coerced to commit murder, and she were always disturbed by all those lives she took when she was a Mafusa Gang member and a KnightWalker Cyborg.
  • Younger than She Looks: Can you believe she's only 13 when she first showed up? She's pretty much like a girl in 15 with her tall stature and her matured appearance.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: The Blackness is not the only stuff that can do harm on Maria because of her current form as a Spirit Guide. Her CN-Unit, snatched from MPS Base in Paris, is actually made to kill immortal and divine beings. It can also do harm on them and reduce their soul to dust if they decide to wear it. CM deduced that Maria would never take down the suit and would die in two years, unless she returned back to him so that he could take her down...

Future Maria

"Demons and heretics had infected the land for generations, taking the life of so many people and corrupted so many souls. So I vowed to end this plague once and for all. And that's what I did. I destroyed dozens of monsters and heretics that corrupted the Church and threatened this planet. Few of those fiends have tried to defeat me, but they soon realized that they were hopeless. There was this point of victory... and then, in the crow's nest, there was this woman! She stood there looking like... like something from the deepest pit of Hell. And from that day she earned herself a name that would haunt me for the rest of my days. Ara Astaroth! She took everything from me, and filled me with... rage. I know that one day I will have her throat on my blade, and this is where the tale ends."

In the dystopian future of Astaroth Hell taking command of the omniverse during the beginning of Rise of Qliphoth era, the future version of the María Pirotecnia de Arzonia y Rodríguez (short for Maria Arzonia), also known as the Angel of Flame, formerly known as the Redeemed One and the Lady Saint is the anti-heroic protagonist in the upcoming crossover storyline, LOTM: Los Reina de Corazónes, who will lead a rebellion against Astaroth Empire after theRevelation of Qliphoth (and subsquently Triggers Hell) that took over the Prime Earth and the omniverse. She will also be a supporting character in LOTM: Sword of Kings AA Final - Eckidina Arc: Madness Sub Arc. She also serves as the one who tells the tale in the future to the members from the Rogues when they arrived in the future sent by Ara Astaroth from the past and how much she and the world changed since Ara sent them to the future 2,000 years ago.

Unlike the original Maria Arzonia who was selfless and kind, this future version of Maria was more vicious and had more extreme tendencies used by violent anti-heroes such as Carl Robinson, Jin Kisaragi and Saeko Busujima. She was no longer being the innocent and completely benevolent person like before and became one of the most cold-hearted anti-hero in CIS Productions. During her rebellion against Astaroth Empire, Maria became blood-thristy and filled with vengeance and hatred due to Ara Astaroth and her companions who had ripped her friends and loved ones away from her. Losing her casual sense of humor and graceful demeanor since she found it tedious to herself after her trauma, Maria became a much darker, more rude and more serious person who will not hestitate to commit murder or massacres even if that would cause mass casualities, thinking it was her own mistake to make her family (most members of La Nueva Familia de Arzonia) slaughtered in front of her. She would do anything to make Astaroth Empire pay for their sins and save the omniverse from being opressed by her sworn enemy, Ara Astaroth.

Angel of Flame with MPS' CR-Unit form

Throughout most of the story (particularly later entries), Maria is incredibly cruel, reckless, and destructive, willing to kill anyone who gets in her way, even innocent people. She is also shown to be generally incapable of accepting full responsibility for her actions, usually blaming the the High Supreme Leaders of Astaroth Empire (Ara Astaroth, Michael Langdon, Aryana Westcott, Unit-CM 130 and among others) for her suffering while ignoring or denying her own part in it. The memory of her misdeeds has driven Maria to lose her sanity and becoming somewhat in a sociopathic anti-hero, a transformation worst than Katarina CouteauAzul Jissele and Carl Robinson who are three of the most known anti-heroes of the storyline.

Earlier on in the story, she is less callous towards the lives of others, albeit perfectly willing to sacrifice an innocent bystander when it is required of her. She also exhibits a deep sense of shame and horror at her reputation as the Angel of Flame. One example is when Maria saves a woman from a duo of demons only for her to run away in terror and call her a monster; Maria is visibly aghast by the fear and hatred others have for her. This shame was further demonstrated when she observed the massacres committed by Vira's minions, causing her to question what she had become. On the first days of Astaroth Empire's uprising, Maria was also very respectful towards gods and divine entities, to the point of calling them "Lords". As time went on, she became disillusioned with the gods and began to respect them less and less for not helping and saving their people from Ara's grasp. She became openly defiant and hostile towards them to the point she considered to kill them for letting her world to die.

Angel of Death

In spite of her cruel acts, Maria is shown to care deeply for her deceased step-mother (Vento of the Front) and friends from La Nueva Familia de Arzonia, with the memories of their deaths driving her to the point of madness. Upon facing her enemies, however, she shows absolutely no mercy towards them shouting words such as "eliminate" and "consign" to show the lack of mercy she has and also to strengthen her resolve to kill them.

Maria became increasingly confident in her newfound abilities. Constantly, she remained composed and unconcerned with the situation at hand. Even when pressured by enemies like the mercenaries of Manufacturing Progressive SciencesVergil and Reaper, she showed no emotional build. Maria has displayed an overbearing sense of pride in her friends' name and a great sense of loyalty to it and kept wearing her organization's crest proudly while refusing to wear any other symbols. Initially, Maria still held onto the notion of sparing the innocent and refused to kill anyone unrelated to her revenge. However as her hatred overcame her, she became cold and ruthless, to the point wheres he was willing to kill anyone who stood in her way and she would kill innocent people if it meant achieving her revenge against Ara Astaroth, including her own subordinates and comrades as living shields or baits.

After the defeat of Ara in the past, the Astaroth Future itself ceased to exist with everything connected to it started to fall apart, including the future Maria, since she belonged to the dystopian future. Sensing the dystopian future falling apart, Future Maria realized it was the result of Katarina from the past defeating Ara and prevented the rise of Astaroth. Believing the future was rewritten and things would one day become hopeful, Future Maria disappeared without a word or resisting, only with a smile and tears of joy, accepting her fate of being erased from existence forever.

In spite of this, Future Maria later resurfaced at the LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow - Anti-Christ Saga, where Michael used his Nether Ability to showed the Astaroth Hell scene to Maria. It was revealed that Michael preserved his future counterpart's remaining power as well as his memory in the Crystal of Nether Sorensen the Demon Prince, and all of this would be reserved for Maria once their final started, so that he could plundge Maria into despair once again before allowing Future Maria to take form, but this time she will become a Zodiac Demon under his command.

This eventually failed when Carl Robinson helped Maria get out of the illusion. However, because of Michael's action, Future Maria started to lurk inside Maria as a split personality in her illusions, acting like a ghost possessing a husk but never truly had a body. Maria still managed to control her darker future self, but she never casted Future Maria's personality out of her, as she needed stronger power to fight against Moloch. Due to Maria's efforts, Future Maria never got back to life.

#-A Tropes[]

  • '90s Anti-Hero: Maria has almost all the characteristics of a nineties anti-hero. She has the same name given when she as pure, is missing an arm (after her second battle with Ara), has an emotionless face and has a very "femenine muscular" body but relies on her lethal equipment instead of superpowers, wears a red costume with lots of bandages, is a badass with a Dark and Troubled Past and sarcasm to boot, and uses a ludicrous lethal chains and fireguns as her main weapon. At one point, she tells Imperia that she doesn't care about anything except Revenge, considering any bystanders who get caught up in her vengeance as weaklings who didn't deserve to live, and she brutally tortures any villains she defeats. In spite of all this Maria turns out to be something of an Unbuilt Trope example, or at least a more subtle one, as the state we first see her in is when she's at her very worst and using a Jerkass Façade to hide from her pain. She goes through several shades of Anti-Hero through her Character Development, but always has some redeeming qualities such as loyalty to her friends and sympathy for those who have suffered like she has.
  • The Ace: Maria seems to awe everyone upon first meeting with her otherworldly beauty and charisma, and has a reputation to match. She is a skilled swordswoman, master strategist, and shrewd politician who is seemingly able to accomplish anything she sets her mind to, leaving those who oppose her rise frustrated—or dead. At the same time her most loyal lieutenants feel as if she is unreachable to them and suffer from feelings of inferiority. At one point, some KnightWalkers eventually decides that they have to leave and pursue their own dream so that they can one day stand beside Maria as an equal rebel. In addition, Maria still the strongest warrior of human race as a whole since all other its defenders met their demise at the claws of Astaroth Empire.
  • Achilles' Heel: The Future Maria has an emotional one. Her memories of watching Magilou and all her loved ones die one by one has been shown to be the one time that Maria showed a truly emotionally vulnerable side to her personality. Luckily, she had Selina Strawberry to help heal her mental wounds, and she was genuinely getting better... until this side to her past was cruelly exploited by Mask of Astaroth. Now, where her Blackness' weakness go? See Adaptational Badass...
  • Accidental Hero: Maria has been put through the wringer so many times that she mostly expresses apathy towards the suffering of strangers (unless they were nice to her), and as such prioritizes defending only those close to her. This doesn't stop her from actually saving innocent civilians from the brink of death, mind you, as evidenced in the later arcs. Yes, she caused the deaths of many children (who were turned into demons) alongside massive property damage, but in the end, not only rescued an entire village and town from the threat of further harm by Leohart's Cult and their demonic fairies (not that they were grateful for it), she also unintentionally turned Suzuya into an Anti-Nihilist by displaying enough redeeming qualities in front of him despite her overall harsh outlook on life.
  • Action Girl: Future Maria is probably the fastest and the most badass female character in the whole story, being able to lay a smack down on Ara, Vira and Black Raven and several Mooks. In fact, she spends a good majority of her time kicking ass of Black Demions with her bare hands.
  • Action Heroine: An Anti-Heroic example. Maria is not only a intelligent Chessmistress and an excellent battle strategist but a badass and powerful Guide Angel of Death who can kick ass of hundreds demons at the same time with her bare hands. While in LOTM: WoSH she was more focused in mind games rather than fighting, the LOTM: LRdC taker her intelligent character further and add the action mode of LOTM: SoK.
  • Action Survivor: Maria gets mixed up in an insurgent attack and reactionary annihilation of her world when she gain all the hatred of the world and several good reasons to get vegeance on Ara. She then reveals that she is going to overthrow Ara and proceeds to not just survive the conflict but fight, commanding the insurgents like her own personal army (like they later become).
  • Adaptational Badass: Her anti-heroic personality makes Katarina Couteau, Azul Jissele and Carl Robinson look like saints! While Maria Arzonia's former self was more composed like an Ojou-Sama, the Future Maria was way more cooler, violent, cruel, awesome and, like Ara would say: badass. While she doesn't have the same amount of powers at her disposal compared to her original self due to losing her Light Path, but she entirely consumed Ara's BLACKNESS and turned it in her new source of power; fire with fire. She devoured the essence that would kill her to fight if her powers were now useless. Even so, her hatred was so immense that the Blackness she devoured was now serving her!
  • Admiring the Abomination: Inverted. Many of the abominations admire or respect her instead. At least two members of the Astaroth Empire express some level of admiration for her pure determination and many of the more powerful Black Demons wish to fight her simply because they view her as the only opponent worthy of them. Mind you, Ara Astaroth is probably the villain in the entire CIS Productions to have displayed obsession for Maria for considering her the most badass and powerful Spirit Guide, ever. At one point, this was almost saw a sign of homosexuality from her part but it is merely admiration.
  • Adorkable: Her social awkwardness and Big Eater antics are really endearing.
  • Affably Evil: She may be insane but she's got a moral code, companions she cares for and is respectful towards worthy opponents... at least until they do something she considers disappointing, at which point she'll ruthlessly rend them to pieces.
  • Afraid of Needles: Maria is a woman who's Covered with Scars, Made of Iron, and whose ultimate attack is flinging herself into a horde of barbaric and often demonic enemies with her BFS and raw, Unstoppable Rage (and she has this pesky scar that burns whenever a demon approaches her) no matter what they throw at her (be it stingers, arrows, horns, rock-like appendages, fire, lightning, or entire TREES why don't you)... and yet, she hates getting sewn up with needles after the fact. And she'll cry and whine all the way through. Luckily, only Selina knows this "weakness", if someone from Astaroth Empire heard it, then her next battle would be a Comedy Corb-Stump Battle.
  • The Ageless: LOTM: Los Reina de Corazones is apparently set centuries after the events of Saga AA in a twisted timeline called Rise of Qliphoth era. Judging from how she was a young adult during the time of World War III, she didn't change much in age only in appearance. During her transformation, her hair, red and face changed much due to her Divine Being energy that became more and more rotten inside due to how much she fell on the darkness. Even so, she contineus to be in her same age before the beginning of Ara Astaroth's rise to power.
  • Allergic to Evil: Maria accursed brand will bleed or hurt whenever a Black Demon is nearby. It only gets worse if a Pure-Blooded Devil is near, and may even kill her. This brand was one of Ara's greatest 'gifts' she gave to Maria in the past in case if she decided to join her. The only thing she has to do is cut this brand located behind her neck and say Ara's name and she will be summoned in front of her. Of course, Maria is not stupid enough to call Ara in front of her to have a direct combat with a monster that can destroy her very existence in 2 seconds.
  • Always Save the Girl: And boys. She's always with her sheer Determinator status, Maria will go to any lengths to keep her friends safe, even if it means allowing hundreds of partially-innocent bystanders to die simply because they mean nothing to her.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Maria lost her left hand during her second fight with Ara. Acting in sheer wrath and hatred, Maria blindly searched for Ara and when found her immediately charged at her with all her might and determination but due for being blind by her rage for losing Vento and Magilou, she ended captured and lost one of her arms during her fight with Ara. If it was only this, it would be pretty much okay for her to regenerate it due to her Heal Factor but Ara's Blackness caused her body to not respond to her commands, resulting in Maria never being able to regenerate her left arm.
  • Anti Anti Christ: It was revealed that her destiny is to be the Destroyer of the World of Astaroth Empire since there is nothing to protect on it (and with the Blackness she dominated, she can be very well become an entity similar to Ara herself), though she's made a vow to become the Protector of the Creation instead. By the end of Los Reina de Corázones, she has saved the world from destruction.
  • Anti-Hero: She's an idealist in a cynical world, she wants the best for humanity, and her gift is stated to be her Heroic Resolve. What muddies up her status as a straight-up hero is that she's fueled by her hatred for all demons and her Unstoppable Rage can be absolutely terrifying to behold. After her brutal encounter with Ara, she swears undying hatred toward her, giving birth to the vengeance-driven Angel of Death as may people would call her now — and along with it, the corrupting toll inside her mind, almost shattering her entire humanity and reducing her to a Sociopathic Hero. Despite being the heroine of the story, she is a sociopathic revolutionary who has little to no compunction over the numerous lives that she has taken. Her only humanizing trait is her love for her deceased grandmother and her friends from Arzonia Family. She gets better again after gaining new companions.
  • Anti-Hero Substitute: While many people in this trope would be different entities, Maria is a special case where she was the new Anti-Heroine and at the same time the former Pure-Hearted Heroine. After her corruption, all traces that you can imagine in Maria disappeared and became a human vessel filled with hatred and thristy for revenge. Over time, her Character Development made her a more sensible Anti-Heroine with a small human heart that at least made her more sympathetic.
  • The Anti-Nihilist: Maria is a very cynical woman living in a bleak, dark world, but that doesn't mean she's willing to just lay down and surrender herself to its whims. Far from it. She's spent the majority of her existence struggling against the odds, even before she was properly born as the Angel of Death, and it's this ridiculous willpower along with her extreme battle prowess that drive her to reject her "destined fate" of dying at the hands of demons, instead determined to live and go by her own rules. It should be noted, however, that it took her quite a lot of Character Development to be the kind of Determinator she is now.
  • Ape Shall Never Kill Ape: As a Guide Spirit, she's essentially half-human and half-Black Demons thanks to the Blackness she devoured. But she pursues only demons, and she seeks to save all humans she can encounter. That being said, if those humans siding with the enemy instead, Maria won't hesitate to kill them as she already able to use them as bait and shields to defeat her enemies from the beginning.
  • Apologetic Attacker: A dark version of her previous Apologizes a Lot... She has a tendency to apologize to her victims after she kills them.
  • Arch-Enemy: Obviously, even Michael Langdon lost this post to Ara Astaroth. Ara not only destroyed her world but rose a hellish empire on Earth, making women and children kill themselves in brutal ways, having demons devouring innocent lives, causing men to Burn, Rape and Pillage entire cities she used to protect, killing every single person she loved, reviving her friends as Black Demons to mentally break her and the list goes on to the point that Ara Astaroth's comedic traces were completely forgotten and became a pure Hate Sink. Initially, Maria was motivated purely on her hatred toward the woman and while she shifts her focus to other obstacles as the story progresses, its pretty clear that Ara is at the top of Maria's hit-list. To the point where she's the final obstacle Maria has to overcome to save the world alongside the Rogues from the future.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Wanted for terrorizing the world government through sheer destructive force, Maria has of late been pushed into adding dine-and-dashing to her rap sheet.
  • Artificial Limbs: After losing her left arm, Maria replaced it with a multi-purpose prosthetic. It has a built-in magnet that allows it to grip chains, it can be used to mount a repeating bullets. It's also handy for punching people. Hard.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: While facing normal demons, she is much more calculist and strategic... But obviously, seeing Ara not far away will make her to a default strategy that is "attack relentlessly until that bitch is dead" with varying results. Ara is probably the only person to receive such treatment from Maria as it was her who took everything she held dearly.
  • "Awesome McCool" Name: Maria Arzonia is just normal and her original nickname "Angel of Flame" was also cool but her future counterpart went further and added "Angel of Death". You simply have to be badass to live up to a name like that... It's get better if you decided to call her as "Shinigami".
  • Ax-Crazy: Incredibly so. If she wants to kill you, don't expect your corpse to look pretty. She uses an actual chains of fire with freezing capabilities that will stop the moves of her enemies. Maria relishes not only the chance for a good fight but also displays disturbing fixation with the actual act of killing demons, as emphasized by her maniacal Slasher Smiles and cackling.

B Tropes[]

  • Badass Boast:
    • "Justice is a thing that would absolutely never be abused! Freedom and respect is everything! This malevolence that is consuming the world as we know it, Astaroth Empire... shall hear its own funeral bell. The judgement shall come, and Ara Astaroth shall die... No, I don't want her to die. I want her to suffer what I have suffered from her. Now, the whole universe is tainted in black. United we stand, and divided we fall. Together, we will overthrow this Dark Empire. We will send it to the deepest pits of Hell where it belonged!"
  • Badass with a Soft Side: Although becoming a extremist, Maria still holds a little part of her original kind self, if only just a little. She still has some Adorkable side and kindness towards her remaining subordinate, though she is not beyond sacrificing others to achieve her goal, without regrets.
  • Be Careful What You Wished For: After losing everything she held dear at the hands of Qliphoth, Maria had turned insane and wished herself to become stronger, awakening her ultimate power and becoming the Angel of Death and a messenger of vengence. To achieve this, she shredded her original kind self and become more and more ruthless. The results were her finalized Future Maria form, which is brutal, ruthless and devastating, a warrior far cry of her original kind and helpful self.
  • Berserk Button: She still retains her former self's Berserk Buttons, but the button of the buttons is pushed by mentioning Ara Astaroth's name in front of her.
  • Big Good: She is the main protagonist of LOTM: Los Reina de Corazones and Part 3 of Madness Sub Arc, with her narrating the story and told the Rogues about the past. She later returns and becomes one of the Big Good Ensembles in LOTM: Star Spangled Crown after Nether Sorensen the Demon Prince summon her back in order to "add pepper" on the Zodiac Blood Game.
  • Boomerang Bigot: She holds extreme grudge against the Black Demons in general, even though they were formerly humans to begin with. Women and children that were Black Demons were also considered as her targets on her list of vengence.
  • Bond One-Liner: A user with an extreme ferver.
  • Break the Cutie: Her entire experience that drove her into the dark side is this. Above all, witnessing her family and friends died one by one at the hands of Ara, before suffering from torture from B1-Killer Kampfdroide Unit-CM 130, were both factors that turned her into a ruthless and vengeful warrior against the Astaroth Empire.
  • Broken Ace: A sad example. Formerly a badass strategist and warm-hearted friend in need, Maria lost every loved one at the hands of Qliphoth. Her mentality went down day by day, before she finally snapped and thus became an extremely violent fighter seeking revenge against Ara and Astaroth Hell.

C Tropes[]

  • Create Your Own Villain: Nice job breaking her, Ara!
  • The Comically Serious: In LOTM: Star Spangled Crown, Future Maria became this after she got closer to Team Witness, especially when criticizing her teamates' awkwardness. Actually, her Comically Serious moments were already presented in LOTM: LRdC and LOTM: SoK to show some side of her original self.
  • Counterpart Comparation: In-Universe. Selina compares Future Maria to Carl Robinson and Selina herself, when she lost control in her personality.
  • Cruel Mercy: Accompanying the Apologetic Attacker, Future Maria no longer shows full mercy towards those whom she once sympathized. Instead, she prefer to break them apart, either ending their suffering through death, or letting them to feel whatever she had suffered.

D Tropes[]

  • Dark Action Girl: Her darker personality combined with her military skills make her into such.
  • Deader Than Dead: After Past Ara's defeat, Future Maria was erased from existence alongside the entire evil dystopia of Astaroth Hell, allowing her past counterpart to move on without losing anyone she cared about. However, there're still hints in the later entries of LOTM: Witnesses of Sleepy Hollow that Maria would become Future Maria once again, if she suffers the similar fate and let her rage gone out of control due to her loss.
    • Inverted in LOTM: Star Spangled Crown when Future Maria, once believed to be dead, started to appear in Maria's mind as a result of Michael's illusion of Astaroth Hell exposed in front of Maria, but it was implied that this "second" Future Maria is just a split personality inside Maria's mind, being formed as a result of Sorensen Crystal's power. It's justified that Future Maria's personality was born from Maria's own mind.
  • Dying as Yourself: After the Astaroth Hell was about to erase, Future Maria does have some kind traces of Mainstream Maria returned when she realized that the rise of Astaroth Empire was prevented thanks to Katarina's forces. She embraced her ending with her first tearful smile appeared in more than 2,000 years, while chanting the final line of "Ten Little Soldiers".

E Tropes[]

  • Early-Bird Cameo: Whom would be known as Future Maria had appeared in Firenza Junior spinoff to take over Maria (albeit very briefly) when the latter was about to kill Nio Hashiri with wrathful look.

F Tropes[]

  • Forshadowing: In Firenza Junior and Saga AA, there are several forshadowing in Maria's Future Form taking form.
    • Whenever Maria went wrathful, she will become no less violent or brutal than Carl, and she would also almost let out the obscene words just before she could restrain herself.
    • Maria also turned more and more unstable after Carl Robinson turned against her, as she would easily get fraustrated and even bursted into tears of sadness when her emotions went out of control.
    • Maria angrily slapped Magilou and beated her as soon as she was infuriated by the latter, in spite of she later restrain herself and apologized to Magilou.
    • Maria showed truly dark streak when she allowed a redeemed Carl to execute Nio Hashiri in his own cruel way, who was truly responsible for the demise Carl's foster parents and friends, though she closed her eyes hard to avoid seeing the gore when Nio was ripped apart. This is the first time Maria never commented on Carl's brutal tendency.
    • Maria said there're several negative elements inside her blood, also saying that she felt there was always a beast hidden inside her heart. She never knew why, but she attempted to control her dark side so that none of them would hurt.
  • Future Me Scares Me: Originally believing that her future counterpart ceased to exist thanks to the Astaroth Hell's demise, Maria was actually freaked out in LOTM: Star Spangled Crown - Rose & Lolth Saga as soon as she found out that Future Maria, who was once believed to be dead, was now living inside her mind palace. This serves as a result of Maria being exposed to Nether Sorensen the Demon Prince's preserved memory of Future Michael during the final battle against Michael.

  • Red Baron: As usual, "Angel of Flames", and also "Angel of Death".
  • Red Eyes! Take Warning: Formerly having green eyes, Maria's eyes turned into scarlet after she was tormented and allowed her inner darkness took over her, becoming Future Maria as a result of that.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Future Maria is hotheaded and violent, also wearing in red, while her Evil Counterpart, Black Raven, acts a lot more callous and cold while wearing in dark purple coat.
  • Red Is Violent: Future Maria's trenchcoat is red, and her darker and more cruel personality is a lot more violent than her original counterpart. Even Katarina and Imperia were freaked out by Maria's tendency.

S Tropes[]

  • She's Back: Raising her heat level to 20,000 degrees celcius and subsquently possessed by Nether Sorensen the Demon Prince's Essence restored Future Maria's memories, almost at the cost of the current Maria's memory. Not as bad as Lara Thomas years later, whose memory was completely swapped with that of Abbie's as a result of Sorensen's possession.
  • Sir-Swears-A-Lot: Unlike the original Maria who is very polite, Future Maria acts and speaks in a way much more rude and aggresive.
  • Sociopathic Heroine: Throughout her life, Maria has varied from a violent psycho who just happened to be fighting evil demons to someone just trying to preserve the lives of herself and her friends. However, even in her nobler periods, she relishes in crushing the skulls of her enemies and striking fear into their hearts. While Maria saves innocent people from Astaroth Empire, she is not above using them as baits or shields to achieve victory, making her a sociopathic heroine in extreme moments of need when sacrifices are necessary.
  • Split-Personality Merge: During the final battle against Valindra Shadowmantle, Maria and Future Maria decided to fuse together to create her awakening form, in order to defy Valindra's Russian Winter through Storm Giants. After Mainstream Maria becomes their dominant personality again, she gets Future Maria's memories from LOTM: Los Reina de Corazónes that detailed her fall from grace, while Future Maria's personality began containing the memories after Ara Astaroth was defeated from Mainstream Maria.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Standing as 1.84m, Future Maria is even taller than the Mainstream Maria and is only shorter than Selina Strawberry during the Rise of Qliphoth era, being a female version to Ichabod when comes in the terms of stature. After their personality merge in Valindra Saga, Mainstream Maria also grew much taller as a result of this.
  • Straw Vulcan: In LOTM: Los Reina de Corazónes, Maria shows hatred towards every Black Demons in sight even if they were human children, saying that the only way was to eliminate them so that she could prevent their plagues from spreading.
    • During her return in Star Spangled Saga, Future Maria dispassionately dismisses the rest of the Agency 355's silly antics and belief in friendship as nonsense straight out of a comedy play, while planning out a way to destroy Sorensen... and Crow Faux, whom she believes will become another Sorensen if left unchecked.
