Jun Kazama (風間 準 Kazama Jun?) is a character in the Tekken series who made her debut in Tekken 2. She is the mother of Jin Kazama, having raised him alone after failing to save Jin's father, Kazuya Mishima, from Devil's influence. Jin assumes her to be dead after witnessing her being attacked by Ogre on his fifteenth birthday, at a time when Ogre was attacking and killing participants of the second King of Iron Fist Tournament. Jun's official status, however, is "unknown". Jun is one of a small group of characters who have only appeared in one canon game, as well as being one of the few characters who has multiple cameos and references intact in every future mainline game. In the non-canonical Tekken Tag Tournament 2, after being defeated in arcade mode, Jun transforms into Unknown, the final boss.
Appearance[]
Jun is one of the tallest women in the Tekken series. She has shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes. She has bangs that frame her face, and wears a white headband or scarf in her hair. She often has a monochrome palette, wearing clothes of white and black, emphasizing her purity of character. She wears functional clothes, usually associated either with her work as a W.W.W.C officer, or martial arts training gear. In Tekken 2, she wore her W.W.W.C. outfit, consisting of a midriff top, shorts, and knee-length socks in a pale-blue color scheme with a pair of brown shoes, and a casual outfit made up of black capris, a sleeveless white blouse, and black shoes over white socks. In Tekken Tag Tournament, an additional outfit saw her wearing martial arts attire, namely a blue karate gi with matching shorts, as well as knee pads and sneakers. When she returned in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Jun wore a close-fitting white outfit decorated with black crow print, reminiscent of the flame design wrapped around the leg of her son Jin's gi pants.
Personality[]
Not much is known of Jun's personality aside from the few hints that other characters have given throughout the series; for example, Kazuya describes her as "mysterious" in his Tekken 6 prologue. Jun seems to embody tranquillity and purity and is shown to have peaceful and animal-loving nature. This is evident in her mission to save Kazuya from the corruption of the Devil in Tekken 2, the forest animals' natural affinity towards her (shown in her Tekken 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 endings), her choice of vocation as an animal welfare officer, and her ability to suppress the Devil Gene (as hinted at by Angel's presence in Kazuya, as well as in her Tekken Tag Tournament ending, and during her special tag win-pose with Devil Jin in Tekken Tag Tournament 2).
Jun is someone for whom spirituality is important. After coming to Tokyo for her work, she became disillusioned being so far from nature, only becoming renewed in her dedication after she was visited by the ghost of her father. Her Tekken 2 profile describes her as being able to 'commune' with nature, and that her meeting with her dead father helped her understand paranormal phenomena. Her desire to save Kazuya is always referred to in spiritual terms and she has some psychic or empathetic abilities of her own. Her exact relationship with Kazuya is very much unknown. Jun was determined to save Kazuya from Devil's possession, and the inner conflict she inspired in him was the main reason he was defeated and seemingly killed by Heihachi at the end of The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2. This suggests that she was able to influence Kazuya for the better, though ultimately was not able to stop him from a violent confrontation with his father.
Jun holds a deep and strong love for her and Kazuya's son, Jin Kazama. Having raised Jin as a single parent in the seclusion of the wilderness since his birth, she and Jin shared a very close and strong bond. She fervently fought off Devil when the apparition tried to make a host of Jin whilst she was still pregnant, and later asked Jin to seek refuge with Heihachi Mishima should anything happen to her. She also instructed Jin in Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts.
Even with the two no longer together, Jun continues to have a strong impact on her son's life and seems to continue to guide him even after being missing for so long. It is an apparition or vision of her that stops Jin from killing Heihachi, and the very reason Jin sought to kill Ogre in the first place was because he believed that the god of fighting had murdered her. Even though the events of Tekken 6 take place years after Jun's presumed death, Jin states that he greatly misses his mother and wishes nothing more than for her to be at his side again. In Jin's Tekken Tag Tournament 2 ending, Jin is surprised when Unknown transforms into his mother after he defeats her. Once she disappears from Jin's arms, he transforms into his alter-ego and flies away into orbit, screaming in pain as he loses his beloved mother again. An apparition of Jun embraces a distraught Jin (in his Devil Jin ending, continuing from his Jin ending) in space, seemingly reversing his transformation.
