Chief James "Jim" Hopper, also known as The American, is the deuteragonist of the Stranger Things franchise and the main protagonist of the novel, Darkness on the Edge of Town.
He is the chief of Hawkins, Indiana, which remained a town that was quiet until a boy named Will Byers mysteriously vanished one night. Initially not taking it seriously, Hopper would find himself involved in a conspiracy of Hawkins' labs and saved the child from a dark dimension known as the Upside Down.
Hopper discovered that Eleven, presumed to be deceased, was actually alive, living by herself in the woods. He decided to take her in, providing a home for her in his cabin, and did everything in his power to hide her from the authorities. After local crops began to rot in October 1984, Hopper discovered that mysterious tunnels beneath Hawkins were the source of the decay. Dr. Owens, the new head of Hawkins Lab, reluctantly informed him that the interdimensional gate beneath the facility was actively growing in size, and in turn corrupting the surrounding environment.
In the months that followed, Hawkins Lab was shut down, with Hopper watching as cement filled in the last traces of the Gate. With Owens's help, Hopper was able to officially adopt Eleven, her legal name becoming "Jane Hopper".
He is portrayed by David Harbour, who also portrays Red Guardian in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hellboy in the 2019 film of the same name and Santa Claus in Violent Night.

Hopper joins his fellow honest cops in arresting Captain Putty and Hardley, as well as bringing in Ardos, Ein and The Iron Masked Marruader in for their crimes. This in turn reveals Pyrrha, Toby and their friends' are working with the Streaming Resistance

Later on, Hopper helps in seizing the assets of Milton Midas's operation as Hopper and the police have been pursuing him for a long time and with Carmen, Juni as well as Bender and Luan exposing them they can work quick and efficient into doing so.
Episode 24[]
Hopper is present for Pyrrha and Toby's call and he is against the idea for bringing Lydia and Lincoln into their organization on account of them being kids and while he admits Toby is a kid too, he at least has a war hammer and that Steve and Pepperjack have at least some skill and the other teens there have uses. He however does agree to the more reasonable approach to see their worth before making a final choice.

Prologue[]
Jim Hopper and Captain Holt are instated to be in charge of what they can do by Peacemaker as well as Nate and Erica to see to those kids are brought to him and the gang out of safety. He also watches as Eleven, The Party and The Robinsons work way to prevent N.Trophies from succeeding too much
Chapter 1[]
Jim Hopper and Holt find Lincoln and Lydia after discovering exactly what happened through Spot and the others' work. He and Holt give chase to the two intend to bring them in for questions.
Upon losing them, Hopper calls Jake and Amy so they can help out in getting the kids to co-operate with them. Hopper watches as the two enter the junkyard and once Lydia and Lincoln do get out of the bus. Hopper gets his car as he drives them to the station.
Hopper and Holt contact their own team and tell them that they have managed to get a hold of Lincoln and Lydia and to get the others to make way to the station to see them
Part 2[]
Hopper and Holt both watch Amy and Jake come in and they explain that both of the kids have been very quiet. Hopper and Holt stay out at first as they watch Amy and Jake explain to Lincoln and Lydia about how they even got here
He and Holt enter the room and explain that Hopper seeked them out in part to Their role in defeating Vecna/One/Henry Creel and their knowledge on the Upside Down. He explains that they have dealt with this threat for years themselves. Hopper clarifies that he was told by Dr.Owens about them when he looked for info on them.
He also had placed Nate Wright in charge of keeping a personal eye on Lincoln for him and Erica Wang to keep an eye on Lydia respectfully. Hopper states Owens keep an eye on them for a while in case anything surfaced again.
As Holt is on the phone with Peacemaker and the others as they investigate with Lydia. He and Jake begin to look around for any possible suspects and they note Victoria Von Gale who they put a case on respectfully. White Dragon and The Spot show up and Hopper helps his colleagues deal with White Dragon before Peacemaker arrives and then they switch targets to keep Spot from accomplishing more thefts
Hopper and the other cops manage to hide some details from Spot but fail to capture him suffice to say. Meeting back with the crew, Hopper learns Blinky is here and has him brought in to brief the kids as he states it was his idea. With the first destination ready, Jim stayed with Raymond so they can continue working behind the scene.
Part 3[]
Holt, Hopper and Ecnomonos tell the others the info they learned after telling Peacmaker about Volo's plans and all that. As well as the lakes.
Chapter 2[]
Hopper manages to find sighting of the Hyde Attacks and relocates back to Marlyin and Tyler with Holt on this info with them being behind it. In turn The two cops tell Peacemaker and the others about what they found and also learn what John Ecnomos and Steve Harrington found out. He also tells Peacemaker, Amy and Jake to tell Lincoln and Lydia that Mulder and Scully are fine and they have been keeping track of them.
Jim hears from Jake and Amy who have decided to join him and Holt in their investigation outside the Streamverse. Hopper is skeptical that they have a way but he learns that considering what The Spot did to The Brooklyn 99 verse, it allowed a one time way to get out of the Streamverse. Eleven who was eavesdropping questions this and why they haven't told Lydia or Lincoln. Jim explains that they want the two to return but not through a way that ends putting a universe at risk.
Part 2[]
Jim Hopper returns with the other cops to take the others back to base and it turns he and the cops were investigating something outside of the Streamverse.They were looking into something with conncections to Spot in the business of chicken in part to the Tweedys respectfully and they worked with Mulder and Scully
Hopper tells Lydia and Lincoln specially they he encountered the agents and that they are coming back to Royal Woods specially to help Lydia respectfully. He tells her, that she is lucky to have two legal guardians respectfully who look out for her. Lydia states she knows that, though she knows they're loving towards her despite their work alcoholic tendencies.
Part 3[]
Jim Hopper works with the adults to detect where Spot made his next move respectfully. They eventually deduct that the location is Jerome Elementary School and the universe where George, Harold and Erica all live in respectfully. He and the others decide to get the others, he decides to handle calling Mike, Will, Eleven and some of the others respectfully
Realizing what is going on after the actions of Melvin Borg and Spot. Hopper shows up with his fellow cops, Boss Baby and Peacemaker's crew to go after the robot Geroge and Harold as well as other robots which he manages to take care of with Peacemaker's crew. His attempt to arrest Von Gale is in vain due to the Zombie Cafteria Ladies used by Spot to go after Peacemaker where he and Holt help deal with.
Hopper and the others manage to recover Von Gale's weather devices and look into their uses respectively as well as Poopy Pants's inventions. When the others note that Spot is causing trouble in Hawkins. Hopper decides to let the other cops go to Alaska to find reinforcement as he needs to be in his hometown to protect the people he cares about and his town.
Chapter 3[]
Jim investigates the emerging upside down stories respectfully that he recieved from his sources and recalls his time in Soviet Russia where he was held captive and dealt with the Soviet Demogorgon
Hopper is confident that with Lydia and Lincoln on his side, this can go move smoothly than previously. Upon the arrival of the group to Hawkins, Jim decides to accompany the kids respectfully. Though they decide to take care of matters himself, Jim decides to team up with Peacemaker and his side to deal with Spot's actions
Hopper equips himself at the police station and then rejoins the crew as they go around taking out all the threats that leaked through the Upside Down. When Byers begins to act up due to his possession, Hopper stays to keep him safe respectively and uses heaters to insure it doesn't completelty take him over recalling his previous encounters with the Mind Flayer
Though the heroes do matter to at least seal the gate respectively, Jim Hopper notes Will's condition and this concerns him and he gets the boy respectively heading back to the others.
Part 2[]
Jim Hopper sees Holt and the others come back with Jesse Pinkman and informs him of what had happened with the others even though Max tries to cover for them respectfully. Upon hearing from the Chief respectfully of what had gone on, Jim Hopper joins the others in heading to the Castlevania verse
He and Professor Membrane join up with the Cops and they help take in Neil and Kandy respectfully. Hearing of Will's death, he is given time off to rest up and grieve, this hits him hard due to how much time he has spend with his mother.
Chapter 5[]
He drives Max, Lucas and Steve into Flying Rhino Junior High upon getting the news that is where ground zero is going to be and arrive around the entry and wait for the rest of the team to get there.
Hopper manages to arrive with the others and he breaks into the school and takes charge with the others as he uses his skills and cop skills to take down N.Tropy's robot mooks respectfully as they enter the boiling room and save Hilda's crew respectfully
Hopper is informed like the others about The Spot being here and like Mike, he encourages Eleven to take care of Spot with the others respectfully as they go.
Chapter 6[]
Hopper decides on arresting Crocker and putting into an asylum after this is all done despite Jaune and Hilda's family not wanting him alive after this. Hopper tells him that he's the cop here and that he'll decide what to do.
Hopper helps Hilda's family and the others get into Crocker's van as they discuss how they are going to help deal with False Groudon respectfully and their part. He is eventually eaten by the False Groudon, though he does stop it from getting Eleven
After he is brought back, he follows through on this and places Crocker in an an insane aslyum, and takes the rest of his cast back to his universe apart from Dustin who joins The Louds, Lydia and the others in going to Salt Lake City to see his girlfriend

Book 3: Culmination[]
Due to the events surrounding N.Tropy's resetting the timeline plan and Ford's death, Hopper and the rest of the Streaming Resistance join rank with Lydia and Lincoln to finish gathering Deathstroke's resources to stop N.Tropy's plan and to help Team Free Will get The Louds as well as Mulder and Scully out of being lobotomized.
Book 4: Falling Climax[]
Hooper helps the Streaming Resistance fight off N.Tropy, Bellroc and Skarel with their other allies and he helps defeat them and save the multiverse before returning back to Hawkins with the rest of the kids.
