Derek Stiles is one of the main characters of the medical video games series known as Trauma Center. He is a surgeon with a special gift as well as a passion for helping people and saving lives.
Around the time the game series started, he had finished up his residency at Hope Hospital within the fictional city of Angeles Bay. He had trained under Dr. Robert Hoffman, Dr. Greg Kasal and Nurse Mary Fulton. The game started out with Dr. Stiles performing a few surgeries alongside Nurse Fulton but after her husband was to be transferred to another hospital, she was to leave with him. She was then replaced with Nurse Angie Thompson, the second main character of the game.
When Derek Stiles was a young boy, he lost his father to a disease that was incurable at the time. This motivated him to become a doctor so that he can save lives and not have anyone else go through the same heartbreak and loss that he and his mother had to endure. Derek, unfortunately, forgot this when he was starting out but was snapped out of his stupor and lazy mindset as he was reminded of the reason why he became a surgeon in the first place.
Dr. Stiles didn't take his job seriously at the start, with which caused Nurse Thompson to not show much respect for him. Regardless, he was a skilled surgeon who knew a lot about the job and did his job well. However, he made a mistake at one point that caused a patient to nearly die. Angie scolded him, questioning his criteria and reasons for becoming a doctor, also going as far as saying that she believes that he's not even a real doctor. This caused Dr. Stiles to feel guilty about what happened, beating himself up and even questioning his own profession. However, a rainstorm came around and a terrible car accident occurred nearby. Dr. Stiles, having left Hope Hospital during this time, rushed back as fast as he could knowing his supervisor, Dr, Kasal, was out of town.
He arrived back and found Angie panicking as she tried all she could to revive the accident victim but to no valid. Derek, wanting to save the patient, made Angie pull herself together as he was determined to save the patient's life but can't do it without her. The 2 of them got to work and operated on the patient. It was a tough surgery and through sheer determination to save the patient's life, Dr. Stiles' special ability awakened. He was able to save the patient with Angie having newfound respect for Dr. Stiles. From then on, Dr. Stiles made a promise to take his job seriously, with Angie giving him a few condition to hold him on that promise.
Dr. Stiles had worked with Angie and their partnership strengthened from there. He and Angie were transferred to Caduceus, a major medical corporation devoted to handling some of the toughest diseases and outbreaks in the world, after treating a patient that contracted a mysterious parasite known as GUILT, Gangliated Utrophin Immuno Latency Toxin. Throughout the first game, Dr. Stiles has worked with Caduceus to tackle several other forms of GUILT as well as the terrorist organization that created the parasites, Delphi.
Derek Stiles is one of several fictional characters that Fanfictiondreamer has a crush on.
Abilities[]
Dr. Derek Stiles is a skilled surgeon who understands the different procedures and using different equipment for the job, such as the scalpel, ultrasound, lazer, etc. He can excise and remove tumors, repair lacerations, pretty much the basics of any surgeon. He also has an immense knowledge in the medical field as well as a vast understand of the human body, injuries and diseases. Even though he hadn't taken his job seriously in the beginning, he was still a passionate doctor who wanted to help save people.
As skilled of a surgeon as he is, he also has another ability. He can access a special power that involves immense focus, almost to a point where it feels like time slows down around him. This is known as the Healing Touch. He is among a handful of surgeons that has this power. Another who has this ability is Dr. Hoffman, who used to have been a surgeon, himself, but a terrible incident caused him to give up surgery, never having picked up a scalpel again. The Healing Touch is an incredible ability which can enable a surgeon to heal injuries and disease that isn't possible for a regular doctor to do, however, it comes with a heavy burden and immense responsibility, one that, unfortunately, Derek has learned the hard way. The Healing Touch also has another weakness as using it too much could cause the user to wear them down to a point where they lose consciousness for a few days, discouraging them from using it too frequently.
Aside from his skills as a doctor, he is also shown to be a real people person. He has mentioned that interacting with his patients had always been his favorit part of his job. He also helped a young teenage girl, who scolded him and Angie for saving her life, by telling her a story of when he was younger as well as help her to snap her out of her suicidial mindset by having her hold a mirror in front of her and trying having her say that she wanted to die while staring at the mirror. At times, not only is Derek able to heal people through his surgical skills, but through assertive but subtle persuations. He is never to snap on anyone until the situation would desperately call for it, such as when Angie was panicking from not being able to resuscitate an accident victim. Even when someone is treating him terribly, he's still willing to talk to them.
