"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." |
When you watched cartoons as a kid, like Disney movies, you thought the hero was untouchable, and would always win at the end. This category will put you into doubt.
A martyr is a character that suffers many near-death experiences, and (almost) lethal injuries. Actually, they sometimes go through so much pain (some even lose body parts) that the audience starts to wonder whether they'll survive.
Note: Do not mix Tragic heroes and Martyrs. While the first category suffers psychological torments, the other suffers physical pains. For example, a Disney hero is often tragic, but less often a Martyr (to avoid shocking young viewers). However, in some cases, a hero can be both a Tragic hero and a Martyr. Simba and Jughead Jones are perfect examples of this.
