The Two Witnesses are bilical figures that was prophcized to save humanity from the forces of Hell in each cycle of the Years of Tribulations, defending humanity before the Judgement Day. Their job is to protect the world from evil. The Two Witnesses had numerous reincarnations and successors throughout the history. There must be two Witnesses at a given moment so if one of them dies, the essence of their soul moves on to the next chosen Witness, suggesting that their souls are eternal.
